Chapter 2

Harrison Vale was a remarkably handsome, imposing mafia boss. At thirty-three, he possessed broad shoulders, an angular jaw, and naturally swept-back, slightly wavy hair. The extremely short stubble on his face gave him a rugged edge that perfectly contrasted with his tailored dark three-piece suit. Artistic tattoos decorated his hands and fingers with visible negative space, and a small, intricate neck tattoo appeared just above his crisp collar.

As Harrison approached the tree, the low hum of conversation in the room began to quiet. His presence demanded absolute, terrifying respect.

Archie, completely unfazed by his father's lethal reputation, reached up on his tiptoes. With careful precision, the toddler hung the tiny white stocking on a low Christmas-tree branch right beside Lena.

Celeste moved instantly, her burgundy velvet gown swishing across the floor. She reached toward the stocking, her elegant smile tightening into a mask of restrained fury. "Archie, we don't hang trash on the main tree."

Noticing Harrison approaching from the corner of his eye, Archie turned. The boy pointed proudly and innocently toward Lena’s modest pregnancy bump.

"Daddy’s baby needs a stocking!" Archie announced brightly, his toddler voice carrying effortlessly over the string quartet playing in the background.

Celeste’s eyes widened in sheer panic. She reached out and yanked the stocking from the branch, holding it loosely between two manicured fingers as if it were diseased. She looked directly at Lena, speaking with a small, dismissive smile designed to humiliate the maid into silence before Harrison could process the words.

"Servants’ babies don’t get Christmas," Celeste sneered.

Harrison stopped dead beside Lena. The music faltered. Every single formally dressed guest in the luxurious room fell dead silent, turning their heads toward the towering mafia boss. The air grew impossibly thick. Harrison’s dark, calculating gaze moved slowly from the tiny white stocking in Celeste’s hand to the protective, trembling hand Lena held over her stomach.

The realization hit him with the force of a physical blow.

Harrison turned his head slightly. "Lena. Our baby?" he asked quietly. The words were a low, resonant rumble that echoed in the absolute silence of the room.

Lena faced Harrison. Her entire body shook, and her breath trembled once, visibly, before she forced herself to draw a shallow intake of air. Despite the terror coursing through her veins, she maintained steady, unbroken eye contact with the man she had secretly loved.

"Yes," Lena said, her voice clear and carrying a heartbreaking weight. "Celeste said you rejected us."

Celeste’s polished smile completely froze. The heiress briefly looked toward the watching guests, realizing that the narrative she had carefully constructed was collapsing in real-time. She met Harrison’s dark gaze with a look of controlled resentment, lifting her chin in defiance.

"A maid can’t give you heirs," Celeste said, her voice dripping with venomous elitism. "I protected your reputation, Harrison."

Harrison did not shout. He did not raise his voice. He simply reached out and took the stocking from Celeste's fingers with a grip so firm it left no room for resistance. He returned the stocking to the low branch of the tree, smoothing it out with his tattooed hand.

Harrison remained standing directly beside Lena, turning his broad shoulders to face Celeste. Sensing the shift in power, Archie slipped a small, warm hand into Lena’s free hand. Lena’s tense shoulders eased slightly as Harrison fixed Celeste with a cold, unwavering stare that promised absolute destruction.
