Chapter 7

The sheer audacity of Isadora's command hung in the warm, golden light of the chandeliers, a toxic poison seeping into the Thanksgiving reception. The fifty guests remained completely paralyzed, their eyes darting between the furious mafia boss and the arrogant socialite.
Dante’s reaction was deliberate, fueled by a cold, terrifying, protective adrenaline. He did not yell. He did not reach for a weapon. His restraint was a masterclass in terror.
He moved with absolute, predatory precision. He stepped decisively forward, inserting his broad-shouldered, masculine frame directly into the space between Nora and the heavy leather wheelchair.
Dante reached out with his artistically tattooed hands, the heavy family signet ring gleaming. He took firm hold of the wheelchair handles, entirely relieving Nora of the burden.
With a smooth, powerful motion, Dante pushed the wheelchair forward. He brought Walter directly into the open place setting at the very head of the massive, lavishly decorated family table, forcing the guests to step back and make room for the true patriarch of the syndicate.
Nora did not retreat. Feeling the solid, unyielding presence of Dante taking control, the paralyzing terror that had gripped her finally broke. Her rigid, tense shoulders eased slightly. She remained standing closely beside Walter's chair, a silent, unwavering pillar of support.
Three-year-old Poppy, sensing the shift in the power dynamic, stayed close to Nora. The toddler reached up and slipped her small hand directly into the maid’s, entirely trusting the woman in the black dress to keep her safe from the angry adults.
Dante stepped to the side of the wheelchair. He reached down and rested a large, warm hand firmly on Walter’s shoulder. The physical touch was a public declaration. It was an absolute, undeniable claim of protection and profound respect for his father.
Dante stood tall, his dark tailored suit absorbing the amber illumination of the room. He placed his body entirely between Isadora and his family, creating an impenetrable physical shield of authority.
He fixed Isadora with a cold, unwavering stare that promised absolute, undeniable destruction. His silence was infinitely more dangerous than a scream.
"You told me my father was too weak to attend this dinner," Dante stated, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that shook the crystal glasses on the nearby consoles.

"He is weak, Dante!" Isadora snapped back, her voice losing its practiced elegance, pitching higher with defensive panic. "Look at him! He is a relic! I am the future of this family! I merely needed to assert the proper hierarchy of this household before the guests arrived!"
"Does asserting hierarchy require torturing a disabled man and locking his dignity in a closet?" Dante inquired, his perceptive eyes narrowing into cold slits.
