Chapter 5

The cinematic, golden light of the chandeliers seemed to sharpen and focus entirely on the space beside the family dining table. Nora stopped pushing the wheelchair, her hands gripping the rubber handles so tightly her knuckles ached. She stood perfectly still, her chest heaving rapidly beneath the fitted black fabric of her maid dress.
Every single guest in the luxurious salon had fallen completely silent. The string quartet lowered their bows. Fifty faces turned toward the head of the table, their fair skin paling as they watched the mafia boss confront the disruption.
Before Dante could ask a single question, three-year-old Poppy stepped forward. The little girl in the rust-red velvet pinafore moved with bright, innocent determination. She completely ignored the towering, intimidating presence of the syndicate capos surrounding them.
Poppy walked right up to the side of the wheelchair, placing her tiny hand on Walter's arm. She then looked directly up at Isadora, her innocent, rosy face contorted with genuine, heartfelt concern.
"Auntie," Poppy announced, her clear American accent slicing through the ambient noise of the reception with the devastating force of a detonating bomb. "Grandpa needs his leg back!"
The words echoed off the gilded mirrors. The absolute, unvarnished innocence of the statement sent a shockwave of absolute horror through the room. The guests held their collective breath. To steal the prosthetic limb of the former syndicate boss was an act of profound, unforgivable disrespect.
Isadora stared down at the toddler, her diamond earrings flashing as she quickly masked her fury. She barely glanced at Walter, refusing to acknowledge the man she had humiliated. She turned her body slightly toward the lavishly decorated dinner table, surrounded by copper bowls of miniature pumpkins and harvest wreaths.
She smoothed a nonexistent crease in her champagne satin gown, a deliberate, dismissive gesture designed to project absolute control.
"Dinner first," Isadora stated, her voice dripping with cold, unapologetic arrogance. "He’s not going anywhere."
The sheer, brazen audacity of the dismissal echoed in the dead-silent room. It was a callous admission of psychological torture, an arrogant attempt to gaslight the entire syndicate into believing she held the ultimate authority in the house.
Dante Rowe stopped breathing. His jaw tightened instantly, the extremely short stubble on his face bristling with suppressed, explosive violence. The artistic tattoos on his hands flexed as his fists clenched at his sides.
He looked from Walter’s tightly clasped, trembling hands resting on the lap blanket, directly to Nora.

He realized in a fraction of a second that the woman he was supposed to marry had physically and psychologically tortured his father out of pure, sociopathic spite, and had weaponized a child's innocence in the process.
Dante did not yell. He did not explode. The absolute stillness of his muscular, masculine frame was infinitely more dangerous than any outburst of rage.
