Chapter 9

The silence in the dining hall was heavy, pressing against the ivory wall panels like a physical weight. The immediate threat of Lisette Shaw had been dragged away into the dark depths of the mansion, but the revelation of her betrayal left a chilling residue in the air. Damon Whitmore remained standing near the head table, staring at the porcelain plate that still held the deadly, glass-filled slice of cake.
He slowly reached out, his heavily tattooed fingers grazing the edge of the plate. He did not touch the dessert. He simply stared at it, the sharp, angular planes of his handsome face locked in a mask of suppressed, apocalyptic rage. The Marzano family had crossed a line that could never be uncrossed.
Evelyn Reed stood by the main oak doors, watching the mafia boss process the betrayal. She knew her place as a housemaid, but the events of the evening had irrevocably tied her to the Whitmore family's survival. She took a quiet step forward, her polished black shoes making almost no sound on the hardwood floor.
“Mr. Whitmore?” Evelyn asked softly, her American accent breaking the heavy silence.
Damon slowly turned his head, his high-bridged nose catching the warm light of the cascading crystal chandeliers. His cold, observant eyes swept over her beautifully structured, softly oval face. The anger in his gaze softened just a fraction as he looked at the woman who had saved his son's life.
“Why are you still standing in this room, Evelyn? Are you not terrified of the violence you just witnessed?”
Evelyn met his gaze directly. “I am terrified of what would have happened to Alfie if I had walked away, sir. The violence was necessary.”
Damon studied her for a long moment. He adjusted the cuffs of his tailored dark suit, hiding the intricate tattoos on his wrists.
“Do you understand the danger you have placed yourself in by interfering with a Marzano assassination plot? Do you realize they will view you as an enemy of their syndicate now?”
“I am aware, sir,” Evelyn replied, her expressive brows drawing together in quiet determination. “But I serve this household. I protect the people in it. I do not fear the Marzanos.”
A faint, dangerous smirk touched the corner of Damon's lips, disappearing almost as quickly as it arrived. He walked slowly toward her, his powerful shoulders casting a large shadow over her pristine white apron.
“Should I promote you to head of my security detail, Evelyn, or will you continue to mask your exceptional instincts behind a maid's uniform?”
Evelyn allowed a small, polite smile to grace her rosy lips. “I believe I am most effective exactly where I am, Mr. Whitmore.”
Damon stopped a few feet away from her. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy gold pocket watch, checking the time. The night was still young, but the war had already begun.
“Would you be so kind as to return to my private study and check on Alfie? Will you ensure he is comfortable and tell him I will be up to see him shortly?”
“Of course, sir. Right away,” Evelyn said, turning toward the door. She paused, looking back over her shoulder at the imposing mafia boss. “What will you do now, Mr. Whitmore?”

Damon turned back to look at the massive, roaring marble fireplace.
“Do you truly believe the Marzano family will live to see the sunrise after what they attempted tonight?”
