Chapter 2

The absolute silence that blanketed the dining hall was deafening. The clinking of silver forks against fine china had completely ceased, leaving only the soft crackle of the marble fireplace. The elite guests held their breath, their eyes darting nervously toward the heavy oak exits. The atmosphere in the grand room had shifted from a celebratory engagement dinner to a potential execution ground in the span of thirty seconds. Damon Whitmore’s cold, observant eyes remained locked on Lisette, his silence radiating a lethal promise.

Lisette’s carefully constructed facade began to splinter. The sculpted satin of her evening gown seemed to lose its shimmer as a cold sweat broke out across her collarbones, flushing her fair, rosy skin. She let out a high-pitched, nervous laugh that echoed awkwardly against the ivory wall panels, her diamond earrings trembling violently.

“Damon, darling, please,” Lisette stammered, her hands fluttering in front of her as if to physically push the child’s innocent accusation away. “This is a horrible mistake. The kitchen staff must have broken a glass near the plating station. Alfie is just a little boy; he misunderstood me.”

Damon did not blink. He slowly withdrew his heavy hands from the polished walnut table, standing perfectly straight. The intricate tattoos on his hands flexed as he adjusted his tailored vest. His deep, quiet voice sliced through the tension, carrying the chilling, interrogative cadence he always employed.

“Do you honestly believe I find amusement in this explanation, Lisette? Do you think I would permit such an incident to pass without absolute scrutiny?”

“No! No, of course not,” she replied quickly, her eyes darting toward the silent, staring guests before snapping back to him. “But to accuse me of such a horrific act? Here? Tonight? You must see that this is a culinary disaster, not an assassination attempt.”

Evelyn Reed remained perfectly still beside Alfie’s velvet chair, her hands folded neatly over her pristine white apron. Despite the danger radiating from the mafia boss, she stood her ground. Her expressive brows drew together in a look of quiet resolve, her delicate cheekbones catching the warm, golden light of the cascading chandeliers. She reached down, placing a gentle, protective hand on Alfie’s small shoulder.

Damon looked out over the sea of frozen, terrified guests. His sharp jaw was set in stone, his high-bridged nose casting a dark shadow over his features. He spoke to the crowd, his tone dangerously calm and commanding.

“Are you all waiting for a formal written invitation to leave my dining room? Do you wish to remain seated and involve yourselves in my family’s private affairs?”

The response was instantaneous and chaotic. Chairs scraped violently against the polished hardwood floor as dozens of powerful men and women scrambled to their feet. No one wanted to be in the crossfire when Damon Whitmore unleashed his legendary wrath. Within moments, the grand dining hall was entirely empty, save for the four people remaining at the head table and the heavy security detail standing silently by the doors.

Lisette took a tentative, desperate step toward Damon, reaching a trembling hand out to touch the dark lapel of his tailored suit.

“Damon, please, let us go upstairs and discuss this rationally,” she pleaded, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “You know how much I love you. You know I would never hurt Alfie.”

May you like

Damon stepped back smoothly, allowing her hand to fall into empty space. His thick, slightly wavy hair caught the candlelight as he tilted his head, his gaze burning right through her polished exterior.

“Why are your hands shaking so violently if this is merely a kitchen accident? Do you think I am blind to the terror bleeding through your makeup, Lisette?”
