Chapter 4

The vast dining hall felt cavernous without the guests. The clean whites of the table linens and the gentle golden highlights reflecting off the crystal stemware stood in stark contrast to the ugly, desperate reality of Colette's betrayal. Colette paced the length of the head table, her sculpted satin gown rustling aggressively. She realized that her initial lies were failing completely against Julian’s relentless, interrogative logic.
"Evan was playing in the hallway!" Colette cried, changing her tactic in a panic. "He saw me holding the cane, yes, but he didn't see what I was doing! You know how children are, Julian! They make up stories! He’s just parroting what this manipulative maid told him to say!"
Evan shrank back into his velvet chair, his lower lip quivering. "I saw you in the garage," the boy whispered, his American accent laced with fear. "You had the sharp tool. You said it was a surprise for Dad's birthday."
Nellie’s heart broke for the child. She knelt beside Evan, her white apron folding neatly over her knees, and pulled him into a gentle embrace. She looked up at Colette, her beautiful, softly oval face hardened with a fierce, maternal protectiveness.
"You should be ashamed of yourself, Miss Vale," Nellie said, her voice trembling but clear. "To weaponize a child's innocence to cover your own cruelty is unforgivable."
"Shut your mouth, you pathetic servant!" Colette screamed, her polished facade entirely destroyed. "You are nothing! You clean my floors! You have no right to speak to me!"
Julian stepped between Colette and the kneeling housemaid, his physical presence acting as an impenetrable wall. The artistic tattoos across his hands flexed as he adjusted the cuffs of his dark three-piece suit.
"Do you believe you hold the authority to scream at my staff while I am standing directly in front of you?" Julian asked, his voice dropping an octave, vibrating with an apocalyptic fury. "Are you under the illusion that you still possess any power in this house?"
Colette gasped, taking a physical step backward as the sheer terror of her situation finally settled into her bones. She was trapped in a room with a mafia boss who knew exactly what she had tried to do.

"I... I panicked, Julian," Colette stammered, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. "The cane was too long! It was hurting your shoulder! I was just trying to trim it down so it would be more comfortable for you!"
"If your intentions were purely for my comfort, why did you cut the wood directly beneath the handle where it bears the entirety of my weight?" Julian asked, leaning slightly forward, his deep voice slicing through her pathetic excuses. "Did you truly think a crippled husband would be easier to control than a healthy one?"
