Chapter 1

The evening birthday banquet inside Julian Crowne’s sprawling mansion was a breathtaking display of luminous elegance. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung from the soaring ceilings, illuminating the gilded ceiling moldings and the pristine ivory-paneled walls with a soft, elegant warmth. There was no heavy yellow cast or muddy orange tint to the room; the clear lighting perfectly revealed the entire magnificent space, bathing the attendees in gentle golden highlights. Tall ivory candles glowed steadily in ornate silver candelabras, situated carefully among sprawling centerpieces of white roses, glittering crystal stemware, and fine porcelain. Warm golden light clearly revealed every face in the room, highlighting the fair, rosy skin of the elite guests gathered to celebrate the mafia boss’s thirty-first birthday.
At the head of the polished walnut table sat Julian Crowne. He was a strikingly masculine man, radiating an aura of terrifying calm. He wore a flawlessly tailored dark three-piece suit that accentuated his broad shoulders. His face was a landscape of sharp, unforgiving angles, featuring a high-bridged nose, a sharply defined jaw, and extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was swept back with immaculate precision. Artistic tattoos crawled across his knuckles and fingers with generous spacing, and a small, distinct tattoo was visible on his neck. Beside his right armrest rested a heavy mahogany cane, a necessary tool while he recovered from a brutal leg injury.
To his left sat his fiancée, Colette Vale. Twenty-nine and fiercely elegant, she wore a sculpted satin evening gown that caught the ambient light, paired with dazzling diamond earrings and a massive engagement ring. Opposite Julian sat his five-year-old son, Evan, looking quiet and observant in a miniature dinner jacket, tailored trousers, and polished dress shoes.
Nellie Hart, a twenty-five-year-old housemaid, moved gracefully through the champagne velvet chairs. Beautiful, gentle, and delicate, she possessed a softly oval face and expressive eyes. Her dark hair was arranged in a loose, low bun beneath a white ruffled maid headband. Her sophisticated black maid dress featured a cinched waist and a short A-line skirt, complemented by a crisp white apron, collar, and cuffs. There was a quiet vulnerability in her manner that had long drawn Julian’s protective attention, fostering a deeply restrained romantic tension between them.
Nellie stepped up to Julian’s right side, her movements practiced and elegant. She carefully placed a crystal water glass before him. As Julian shifted his weight, reaching his tattooed hand out for his mahogany cane to stand, Nellie’s expressive eyes darted downward. She noticed a deep, unnatural shadow beneath the polished handle.
Moving entirely on instinct, Nellie’s hand shot out. She gently but firmly drew the cane back across the carpet before Julian could place a single ounce of his body weight upon it.

Julian froze. He looked directly at Nellie, a rare flicker of uncertainty briefly crossing his usually impenetrable expression. The entire room seemed to hold its breath. Every guest stopped eating, the clinking of silverware silencing entirely as they turned toward the head table. Julian’s deep, measured voice resonated through the bright room.
"Is there a specific reason you have taken my cane, Nellie?"
