Chapter 8

The journey to the secondary panic room was a blur of smoke and shadows. Tristan moved through the subterranean corridors of his estate with lethal, predatory grace, his heavy pistol leading the way. He kept Lila and Henry tucked safely behind his broad frame, his body an impenetrable shield.

They encountered two more Rowe mercenaries near the armory stairs. Tristan didn't hesitate; he fired twice with terrifying precision, dropping both men before they could even raise their weapons. He didn't slow his pace, stepping over the bodies as he guided Lila to a heavy, reinforced steel door hidden behind a false concrete wall.

He pressed his thumb against the biometric scanner. The door hissed open, revealing a stark, brightly lit bunker stocked with medical supplies, security monitors, and a weapons rack.

Tristan ushered them inside and hit the lockdown button. The massive steel bolts slammed into the frame, sealing them in absolute, terrifying silence, severing them from the sounds of the war raging above.

Tristan set Henry down on a cot, handing the boy a fresh bottle of water. He turned to Lila, his chest heaving as the adrenaline slowly began to recede from his bloodstream.

"Lock this door from the manual override," Tristan instructed, his voice tight and urgent, pointing to a heavy iron lever on the wall. "Do not open it for anyone. If you hear my voice, verify it through the intercom. If I don't give you the password—'December'—you do not open it."

Lila’s eyes widened in panic. She rushed forward, grabbing the lapels of his blood-stained tactical sweater. "Tristan, what are you saying? You can't leave us!"

"I have to, Lila," Tristan said, his hands coming up to cup her face, his thumbs brushing the soot from her cheeks. "Marcus Rowe is leading the assault personally. He is in the grand foyer. If I don't cut the head off the snake right now, they will eventually breach this room. I have to end this."

"They have an army!" Lila sobbed, tears flowing freely down her face. "You can't fight them all alone. Please, stay here with us."

"My men are fighting and dying up there for me," Tristan said, his voice softening, filled with a profound, agonizing love. "I cannot hide while they bleed. And I cannot let the man who sent killers after you draw another breath."

Lila pressed her forehead against his chest, her heart shattering at the thought of losing him just as she had found him. "Promise me you'll come back."

Tristan lifted her chin, forcing her to look into his unwavering dark eyes.

"I won't let you die," Tristan swore fiercely. "I will burn this world to ash before I leave you. I'm coming back for you. I swear it."

He leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, desperate kiss. It tasted of salt, smoke, and an absolute, undeniable devotion. He poured every ounce of his love into that kiss, a silent vow to survive the impending slaughter.

He pulled away, stepping backward toward the door. "Lock it, Lila."

Lila watched him step out into the smoky corridor. She grabbed the heavy iron lever and pulled it down with all her might. The final locks engaged with a loud clank. She sank to the cold concrete floor, burying her face in her hands as the terrifying wait began.
