Chapter 2

The silence in the grand reception hall was absolute, pressing against the guests like a physical weight. The elite bosses and politicians who populated Tristan Ashford’s world understood the unwritten rules of his syndicate: loyalty was paramount, and his wrath was a force of nature.
Lila faced Tristan, her clear eyes wide with a mixture of profound terror and desperate relief. She could feel the stares of a hundred dangerous people burning into her skin. She steadied a trembling breath, refusing to look away from the imposing mafia boss.
"Soap," Lila whispered, her fragile voice carrying clearly in the hushed room. "For singing his mother’s lullaby."
Tristan did not blink. He slowly turned his head to look at his fiancée.
Sabrina’s polished, confident smile faltered completely. She briefly glanced down toward Henry, realizing the child had just unwittingly dismantled her entire carefully constructed narrative, before she met Tristan’s dark, furious gaze with a look of controlled resentment.
"Dead women don’t get Christmas songs," Sabrina stated, her voice trembling slightly, yet laced with a venomous, aristocratic arrogance. "I am to be your wife, Tristan. I will not have a servant usurping my place and filling his head with ghosts."
Without a single word, Tristan reached over to the console. He picked up the clear glass of water and offered it to Lila, deliberately keeping his massive body positioned between the two women. Lila reached out with shaking fingers and accepted the glass, taking a small, desperate sip to wash away the phantom taste of lye that still haunted her from earlier that afternoon.
Henry leaned comfortably against Lila’s rumpled apron, still holding her free hand tightly, entirely trusting the trembling maid over the woman dripping in diamonds.
Tristan fixed Sabrina with a cold, unwavering stare. The artistic tattoos on his hands stood out starkly as his fists clenched.
"You humiliated a woman under my protection," Tristan said, his voice deadly quiet. "You assaulted the woman who cares for my son."
"She is a maid!" Sabrina shrieked, losing her composure entirely as the surrounding guests began to murmur. "I am the daughter of the Rowe syndicate! My father and you forged an alliance on this marriage!"
"The alliance is dead," Tristan declared, the words echoing off the gilded mirrors. "And the engagement is broken. Get out of my house."
"You cannot do this!" Sabrina gasped, her face draining of color. "My father will burn your empire to the ground over this insult!"
"Let him try," Tristan replied, his angular jaw locked in cold defiance. He raised a hand, signaling his heavily armed lieutenants who stood at the perimeter of the room. "Escort Miss Rowe off the property. If she resists, drag her."
Two massive men in tailored suits stepped forward, gripping Sabrina by the arms. She thrashed against them, her emerald velvet gown tearing slightly at the seam as they hauled her toward the grand double doors.
"You will regret this, Tristan!" Sabrina screamed, her voice echoing shrilly over the string quartet that had long since stopped playing. "You will pay for this in blood!"

Tristan ignored her frantic threats. He turned his back on the stunned, breathless crowd, entirely focused on Lila. He looked down at the trembling maid and his son, the cold fury in his eyes instantly melting into a profound, protective warmth.
"Come with me," Tristan ordered gently, resting a heavy, reassuring hand on Lila’s shoulder. "Both of you. We are leaving this room."
