Chapter 4

The morning sun struggled to pierce the thick, grey winter clouds hanging heavily over the Ashford estate. Inside the mansion, the festive atmosphere had been completely stripped away, replaced by the grim, hyper-vigilant reality of a mafia stronghold bracing for a siege. Heavily armed guards in tactical gear patrolled the grand hallways, their boots echoing sharply against the marble floors.
Lila was seated in a luxurious guest suite in the secure east wing. The fitted black maid dress had been discarded by Tristan’s strict orders. She now wore a soft, charcoal-grey cashmere sweater and tailored dark trousers. Her hair was neatly brushed, falling smoothly over her shoulders. Henry sat beside her on the massive bed, watching a cartoon on a tablet, his plush fox resting in his lap.
The heavy oak door opened, and Tristan walked in, accompanied by his most trusted capo, a towering, scarred man named Dante. Tristan had traded his three-piece suit for a dark tactical turtleneck and a shoulder holster, his heavy pistol resting snugly against his ribs.
"The perimeter is locked down, Boss," Dante reported, his gruff voice filling the room. "We’ve pulled our men from the southern supply lines to reinforce the estate. Marcus Rowe sent an envoy an hour ago."
"What did Marcus want?" Tristan asked, his dark eyes never leaving Lila as he crossed the room.
"He demands you hand over the maid, publicly apologize to Sabrina, and cede control of the riverfront casinos," Dante recited, his face a mask of disgust. "If you refuse, he promises to level this estate and slaughter everyone inside."
Lila’s heart spiked with instant panic. She stood up, grabbing Tristan’s forearm. "Tristan, you have to give me to them. You can't sacrifice your men and your business for me. I can take it. I can survive them."
Tristan’s jaw tightened. He looked down at her delicate hands clutching his arm, then up into her clear, expressive eyes.
"I would burn this entire city to ash before I let them touch a single hair on your head," Tristan said, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that sent shivers down her spine. He turned to his capo. "Dante, tell the envoy to go straight to hell. And shoot out his tires before he leaves the gate."
"With pleasure, Boss," Dante smirked, nodding respectfully to Lila before exiting the room and closing the heavy door.
"Tristan, please," Lila begged, tears welling in her eyes. "They have hundreds of men. They will kill you."
"I have survived worse odds," Tristan murmured, stepping closer and wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his broad chest. "I need you to listen to me, Lila. I have to leave the estate to secure our remaining armories and rally the captains. If I show weakness today, other families will join the Rowe syndicate."
"I'm scared," she whispered, burying her face in his shoulder, inhaling the scent of his cologne and the cold metallic tang of his weapon.
"I know," he said, pressing a fierce, lingering kiss to the top of her head. "But I need you to be brave for Henry. I will leave Dante's best men to guard this hallway. You are not to leave this suite under any circumstances."
"Promise me you'll come back," Lila pleaded, looking up at him.

"I swear it on my life," Tristan vowed. He leaned down, capturing her lips in a sudden, desperate kiss. It was a kiss forged in the fires of impending war, tasting of urgency and profound, undeniable devotion.
When he pulled away, he offered a reassuring smile to Henry, who waved happily from the bed. Tristan turned and strode out of the room. As the heavy door clicked shut, the reality of the mafia war pressed in on Lila. She was no longer watching from the sidelines; she was the very heart of the storm.
