Chapter 9

The revelation hung in the sterile air of the panic room like a live grenade. Elise stared at Damon, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm. She had worked in the Vale estate for two years, and the topic of Lucy’s mother was strictly forbidden. The staff murmured rumors—a tragic car accident, a sudden illness—but no one knew the truth.

"Damon, what does the file say?" Martha asked, her voice trembling. The elderly woman gripped the edge of the metal cot, her knuckles white. "Elias promised he would bury that information when you agreed to marry Celeste. It was the entire foundation of the alliance."

"He lied," Damon stated flatly, his dark eyes locked on the glowing red screen. The negative space tattoos on his hands stood out starkly as his fists clenched with white-knuckled rage. "He kept the evidence as leverage. And now that he's dead, he's burned the world down on his way out."

"What evidence?" Elise pressed, stepping closer to him, desperate to understand the gravity of the threat.

Damon turned away from the monitor and looked deeply into Elise’s clear, expressive eyes. The hardened, ruthless mafia boss looked incredibly vulnerable for the first time since she had known him.

"Lucy’s mother was a federal prosecutor," Damon confessed, his voice a low, painful rasp. "Her name was Sarah. We fell in love, but she didn't know who I was until she got pregnant. When she found out I was the head of the Vale syndicate, she threatened to take Lucy away and expose my entire operation. She was going to put me in a federal penitentiary for the rest of my life."

Elise gasped, her hands flying to cover her mouth. "Oh my god."

"Elias Arden found out before I could reason with her," Damon continued, the guilt heavy on his broad shoulders. "He ordered the hit without my permission to protect the syndicate. He made it look like a robbery gone wrong. I didn't pull the trigger, Elise, but my world killed her."

"And the file?" Martha asked, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks.

"It's the audio recording of Elias ordering the hit, and my subsequent cover-up to protect my family," Damon said grimly. "The feds will have it in minutes. The rival syndicates already have it. They will see that a federal agent's death is tied to my name. It will bring the full weight of the FBI down on this estate, and every rival boss will use the chaos to tear my territory apart."

The immediate danger of Celeste and the mercenaries felt small compared to the storm that was now bearing down on them. The federal government did not negotiate.

"We have to run," Elise said instantly, her protective instincts flaring. She looked back at the sleeping toddler. "We have to take Lucy and Martha and leave the country. Now."

"I can't run, Elise," Damon said, stepping toward her and resting his hands on her shoulders. "If I run, I look guilty, and they will hunt me to the ends of the earth. I have to stay and fight this legally and violently."

"You will go to prison!" Elise cried, tears finally spilling over her rosy cheeks. "Lucy will lose her father!"

"I will not let that happen," Damon swore, pulling her flush against his chest. He wrapped his arms tightly around her, burying his face in her hair. "But I cannot protect you and Martha here. The estate is going to become a war zone and a federal crime scene by sunrise."

"I am not leaving you," Elise sobbed into his dark turtleneck.

"You have to," Damon commanded gently, pulling back to look into her eyes. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy metal key and a small, encrypted drive. He pressed them into her hand. "This is the key to a safe house in Switzerland, under a ghost corporation. There are millions in offshore accounts tied to it. You will take Martha and Lucy tonight, on my private jet."

May you like

"Damon, please," Martha wept from the cot.

"I am the boss of this family, and this is my final order," Damon said, his voice echoing with absolute authority. He looked at Elise, a heartbroken, desperate love shining in his eyes. "Keep my daughter safe. Keep the woman who raised me safe. Wait for me."
