Chapter 1

A crowded Christmas reception filled the mansion’s magnificent glass-roofed winter garden, vibrating with the low, dangerous hum of the city's criminal elite. Three massive crystal chandeliers flooded the entire interior with warm golden light, casting an ethereal glow over the snow falling silently on the glass above. Ivory candles glowed steadily in ornate brass candelabras placed meticulously beside gilded planters, polished marble tables, and carved walnut furniture. Plush velvet armchairs stood near an extravagant dessert buffet. At the center of the room, a towering Christmas tree sparkled with golden lights and crimson ornaments, dominating the lavish space.

Damon Vale stood near the dessert buffet, his imposing presence demanding a wide berth from the surrounding guests. He was a handsome, masculine mafia boss with broad shoulders and a sharp, angular jaw. His naturally swept-back hair and extremely short stubble gave him a rugged edge that contrasted beautifully with his tailored dark three-piece suit. A family signet ring caught the candlelight, and a luxury wristwatch peeked from his cuff. Striking artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated his hands and fingers, while a small, intricate artistic tattoo appeared just above his crisp collar.

Damon picked up a cinnamon cookie from the silver platter. He took a bite, and immediately, his chewing slowed. He paused in absolute recognition. The unique blend of spices, the exact texture—it was a taste from a childhood he had long thought buried.

Before he could process the memory, the crowd parted. Elise Hollis approached, gently supporting the elbow of an elderly woman. Elise was a beautiful, gentle maid with delicate features, clear, expressive eyes, and fair, rosy skin. She wore a fitted black maid dress, a white collar and cuffs, and a white ruffled maid headband. Loose strands framed her face, and her white apron was lightly creased from a long evening of frantic work.

Every guest in the immediate vicinity fell dead silent, the hush spreading rapidly through the winter garden as they turned toward Damon.

Damon looked directly at Elise, his dark eyes intense.

"Elise. Who baked this?" Damon asked quietly.

Before the maid could answer, a tiny, cheerful voice sliced through the heavy tension. Lucy Vale, Damon’s three-year-old daughter, came bounding over. She had round rosy cheeks, soft curls, and tiny dimples. She wore a red velvet dress with an ivory collar, a cream knitted cardigan, white woolly tights, and little buckle shoes. She held a half-eaten gingerbread cookie in her small hand.

Lucy recognized the older woman instantly. She looked excitedly at Damon, sharing the familiar arrangement without possessing the capacity to understand the profound cruelty behind it.

"Nana sleeps with the doggies!" Lucy announced, with little toddler pauses breaking up her innocent excitement.

Damon’s blood ran completely cold.

Elise carefully helped Martha Cole settle into a nearby velvet armchair. Martha, Damon’s former nanny who had raised him and later helped care for Lucy, looked frail and exhausted. She wore a modest wool dress and a thin knitted shawl, shivering slightly despite the warmth of the room. Elise stood up and met Damon’s demanding gaze without flinching.

"Celeste moved Martha into the kennels," Elise stated, her voice steady despite the terrifying audience.

Celeste Arden, Damon’s fiancée, stood a few feet away. She wore a stunning champagne satin gown and heavy ruby earrings that flashed as she moved. Celeste briefly avoided Martha’s gaze before facing Damon. Her polished, aristocratic smile tightened defensively.

"Old servants don't need guest rooms," Celeste said smoothly, attempting to brush off the horrific revelation.

Damon’s jaw set into stone. The negative space tattoos on his hands flexed as he gripped his own anger. His voice remained incredibly low and measured. He looked directly at Celeste.

"Celeste. Who raised me?" Damon asked, his tone laced with absolute venom.

Damon stepped away from his fiancée. He stood beside Martha’s velvet chair and gently took the older woman's trembling hand. Lucy smiled and offered Martha the gingerbread cookie, while Elise remained close beside Martha, a silent protector. Celeste watched in pale horror as Martha’s frail fingers closed around Damon’s tattooed hand.
