Chapter 8

The heavy steel tumblers of the panic room locked into place, sealing out the sounds of the dying war above. The silence inside the bunker was sudden and absolute, broken only by the ragged breathing of its occupants. The small, reinforced room was illuminated by a soft, humming overhead light, revealing survival supplies, a bank of security monitors, and a few military-style cots.
Damon stood with his back to the steel door, his chest heaving as the adrenaline slowly began to recede from his bloodstream. He looked across the small room. Elise was sitting on one of the cots, holding Lucy securely in her lap, while Martha rested beside them, her eyes closed in exhaustion but breathing steadily.
"Is it truly over, Damon?" Martha asked softly, opening her eyes to look at the boy she had raised.
"Yes," Damon replied, his deep voice carrying a profound weariness. "Elias is dead. Celeste's top lieutenants are dead. The remaining Arden forces will scatter by dawn. The threat is neutralized."
He walked slowly toward the center of the room. He discarded his shoulder holster, dropping the heavy weapon onto a metal table with a loud clank. He ran his tattooed hands over his face, wiping away the plaster dust and sweat of the battle.
Elise looked up at him, her clear, expressive eyes searching his sharp features for any sign of injury. "Are you hurt?"
"No," Damon answered quietly. He knelt on the floor directly in front of her, bringing himself down to eye level with the woman who had saved his family. He looked at Lucy, who was fast asleep against Elise's charcoal-grey cashmere sweater.
Damon reached out, his large hand gently cupping Elise’s cheek. His thumb brushed over her fair, rosy skin, marveling at the sheer strength she had displayed.
"You disarmed an armed assassin," Damon murmured, his dark eyes burning with intense, overwhelming admiration. "You protected my daughter when I wasn't there."
"She was going to hurt Lucy," Elise whispered, leaning slightly into his warm touch. "I couldn't let her. I would have died before I let her touch a hair on her head."
"I know," Damon said, his voice thick with emotion. "I saw the way you fought. You are the bravest woman I have ever known, Elise."
The air between them grew incredibly thick, charged with a magnetic, undeniable pull. The boundaries of class, of employer and maid, had been entirely burned away in the fires of the mafia war. They were simply a man and a woman who had fought to survive for the people they loved.
Damon leaned closer, his gaze dropping to her lips. Elise’s breath hitched, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs, but she didn't pull away. She wanted this. She had secretly loved the stoic, protective mafia boss for months, watching him from the shadows of his massive estate.
Before their lips could meet, a sharp, buzzing alarm blared from the bank of security monitors in the corner of the room.
Damon instantly pulled back, the romantic tension shattering as his ruthless instincts kicked in. He stood up and crossed the room, staring at the glowing screens. The external cameras had been destroyed, but the internal server was flashing a bright red warning on the central monitor.
"What is it?" Elise asked, panic returning to her voice as she gently laid Lucy down on the cot.
Damon’s angular jaw set into a rigid line. He tapped a few keys on the console, pulling up an encrypted message that had just bypassed their firewall.
"It’s an automated dead-man's switch," Damon said, his voice dropping to a lethal timber. "Elias Arden set it up in the event of his death."
"A bomb?" Martha gasped, clutching her shawl.
"No," Damon replied, his dark eyes scanning the text on the screen, a chilling dread settling over his broad shoulders. "It's a data dump. Elias just sent a file to every major crime syndicate on the eastern seaboard, and to the federal authorities."
Elise stood up, wrapping her arms around herself. "What kind of file?"
May you like
Damon turned to look at her, the shadows of his past rising up to consume them both.
"The truth about what happened to Lucy's mother," Damon whispered.
