Chapter 4

The morning sun struggled to pierce the thick, grey winter clouds hanging heavily over the Vale estate. Inside the mansion, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. The delicate Christmas decorations in the winter garden had been abandoned, replaced by the grim reality of a mafia stronghold preparing for a siege. Heavily armed guards patrolled the hallways, the windows were reinforced with steel shutters, and the gates were locked down with armored vehicles.
Elise stood in the center of a luxurious guest suite on the second floor, a room Damon had explicitly reassigned to her and Martha. The fitted black maid dress was gone. By Damon’s strict orders, Elise had been provided with a soft, charcoal-grey cashmere sweater and tailored black trousers. Her loose strands of hair were finally brushed and pulled back into a neat, elegant clip. She looked at herself in the gilded mirror, barely recognizing the woman staring back.
"You look beautiful, my dear," Martha said softly from the massive four-poster bed. She was sitting up, leaning against a mountain of plush pillows, looking drastically better after a hot bath and a night in a real bed.
"I feel like an imposter," Elise admitted, turning away from the mirror. "I spent the last two years scrubbing these floors. Now I'm wearing clothes that cost more than I made in a year."
"Damon sees your worth," Martha smiled, a knowing glint in her tired eyes. "He is a ruthless man to his enemies, Elise. But to the people he loves, he is fiercely protective. You proved your loyalty to his blood. In our world, that makes you family."
A knock at the door preceded Damon’s entrance. He was dressed in a dark turtleneck that clung to his broad chest, a shoulder holster strapped over his muscles carrying a heavy pistol. The small artistic tattoo above his collar was stark against his fair skin. He looked exhausted, yet thrumming with dangerous, kinetic energy.
"How are you feeling, Martha?" Damon asked, walking to the edge of the bed.
"Much better, dear boy. Stop worrying about an old woman," Martha scolded gently. "Where is Lucy?"
"She's in the playroom with my top lieutenant," Damon replied. He turned his attention to Elise, his dark eyes sweeping over her new attire. An undeniable flash of appreciation warmed his sharp features. "The clothes fit."
"They do. Thank you, Mr. Vale," Elise said, her hands nervously smoothing the cashmere.
"Damon," he corrected her, his voice a low rumble. "I told you last night. You are not staff anymore."
"Damon," she repeated, her cheeks flushing a delicate rosy pink. "Has there been any word from the Ardens?"
Damon’s jaw tightened. "Elias Arden called an hour ago. He demanded a sit-down to discuss his daughter's humiliation. It’s a trap, of course. He’s stalling while he moves his men into our territory. I have sent my enforcers to lock down the ports and the warehouses."
"You are going to war over us," Elise whispered, guilt heavily lacing her tone. "People are going to die because I brought Martha inside."
Damon closed the distance between them in two long strides. He stopped mere inches from her, his towering frame forcing her to look up into his fierce eyes. He reached out, his tattooed fingers gently grasping her chin, forcing her to hold his gaze.
"Listen to me carefully, Elise," Damon said, his voice deadly serious. "You exposed a rot in my house. You saved the woman who raised me from freezing to death. This war was inevitable; Celeste and her father only wanted my territory. You did not cause this. You gave me the clarity to end it."

Elise’s breath hitched at the proximity, the heat of his skin burning against hers. She could see the violent storm raging behind his eyes, but also a profound, unexpected tenderness directed solely at her.
"I will protect you," Damon swore softly. "Both of you. With my life."
