Chapter 3

The realization that a monstrous act of treason had just been exposed radiated outward from Sebastian Blackwell like a physical shockwave. The sheer, masculine power emanating from his broad shoulders was intoxicating and terrifying all at once. The clinking of fine porcelain ceased entirely within his immediate radius, the silence spreading down the long grand salon until it consumed the entire space. One by one, every single dinner guest stopped eating and speaking. Fifty of the most dangerous men and women in the city turned their heads, all staring toward the base of the marble staircase.

Serena Rowe stood frozen in her luxurious emerald satin gown. Her eyes briefly, almost imperceptibly, flicked toward the grand marble staircase that led to the private bedrooms, a micro-expression of pure, unadulterated panic flashing across her face. She quickly forced her gaze back to meet Sebastian’s intense, burning stare. A reassuring, polished smile appeared on her lips, arriving just slightly late, failing to reach the coldness in her eyes.

"Just mistletoe, darling," Serena stated, her American accent dripping with a manufactured, icy pragmatism. "You know how festive your brother gets during the holidays. It was a harmless tradition. The boy is simply exaggerating."

Sebastian did not respond to Serena. He did not even turn his head to acknowledge her desperate, transparent lie. His unwavering, intense focus remained entirely on the young woman standing beside him holding the evergreen wreath.

He slowly turned his broad shoulders, casting a formidable shadow over the exquisite Christmas display. He looked directly at Ivy, his dark eyes analyzing the sheer, trembling bravery of the maid in the creased black dress.

"Ivy," Sebastian commanded. His voice was deep, slow, and incredibly controlled, but it carried a lethal, apocalyptic authority that shook the very foundation of the room. "Where were they?"

The question hung in the bright, luminous air, demanding an answer that would dictate the survival of everyone seated near the velvet sofas. The entire syndicate was staring at the housemaid. Capos shifted uncomfortably. No one dared to breathe too loudly.

Ivy stood paralyzed, her delicate features pale with shock. She felt the crushing weight of fifty gazes, but the only eyes that mattered were the ones burning into hers. She knew that answering this question would either save her and the little boy she cared for, or it would seal her death warrant.

Tears gathered heavily in Ivy’s bright, expressive eyes, making them shine brilliantly in the golden light. She steadied a trembling breath, her chest rising and falling rapidly against her rumpled white apron.

She held Sebastian's gaze, answering without looking away, drawing on a well of courage she didn't know she possessed.

"Behind your locked bedroom door."

The devastating confession dropped onto the polished marble floor. The words, spoken with such raw, unprotected honesty, shattered the fragile reality of the opulent Christmas reception. The woman destined to be the queen of the Blackwell syndicate had not only betrayed the boss with his own brother, but she had done so in his own private sanctuary.
