Chapter 2

The ambient hum of the crowded Christmas reception flowed seamlessly around the room, masking the quiet, desperate terror radiating from the young maid. The clinking of crystal glasses and the soft scraping of polished shoes continued across the vast grand salon, but near the base of the marble staircase, a profound tragedy was about to unfold. The warm golden light cascading from the crystal chandeliers highlighted the sudden, suffocating tension that had gripped Ivy Collins as she closed the distance.
Ivy stopped directly beside Sebastian, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the unfinished evergreen wreath. She did not look at the elite guests, nor did she look at the polished fiancée standing nearby. She focused entirely on the mafia boss. She knew the danger of stepping out of line in a room full of syndicate killers, but the threat she had endured had shattered her instinct for self-preservation.
She met Sebastian’s intense, dark eyes, refusing to look away despite the absolute terror racing through her veins.
"I saw Serena with Gavin," Ivy whispered.
Her voice was incredibly quiet, pushing through a violent, trembling breath, yet it carried a devastating, undeniable truth that sliced through the ambient noise of the immediate vicinity.
Sebastian’s deep, controlled rhythm of breathing halted instantly. The cold, unyielding armor he wore as the mafia boss slipped for a fraction of a second, revealing a profound, dangerous questioning. The artistic negative-space tattoos on his hands flexed as he stared down at the trembling, disheveled maid. Gavin was his thirty-five-year-old older brother, a man who had always coveted the throne.
Before Sebastian could process the staggering weight of the accusation, a small, cheerful voice broke through the heavy tension.
Six-year-old Milo Blackwell, dressed impeccably in a charcoal suit and a burgundy bow tie, skipped happily toward the group. His fair, rosy cheeks were flushed with excitement, his young mind completely oblivious to the dangerous syndicate politics swirling around him. He carried a small, beautifully carved wooden reindeer in his hands, presenting it like a prize.
Milo approached Serena, looking up at her with a wide, completely sincere smile, clearly pleased to deliver a message he thought was part of a festive holiday game.
"Auntie," Milo announced, his young American accent ringing clearly across the polished marble floor. "Uncle wants another secret kiss!"

The words dropped into the grand salon like a live explosive charge. A collective, audible gasp erupted from the surrounding guests. The murmurs of the elite syndicate members died instantly. The room was suddenly paralyzed. The innocent observation of the child had just brutally translated the crime for everyone in the room. It was not a game. It was a calculated, vicious betrayal occurring directly under the boss's roof.
Serena’s polished public smile froze instantly, her diamond earrings swinging as her head snapped down to look at the boy. The color completely drained from her fair, aristocratic face. The secret she had buried, the dangerous affair she had orchestrated with the boss's own brother, had just been exposed by a child in front of fifty witnesses.
