Chapter 10

The dim, plush corridors of the west wing felt suffocatingly quiet compared to the war that had raged outside. Aurelio stepped out of the suite, pulling the heavy oak door shut behind him, leaving Nerea locked safely inside. He held an assault rifle with terrifying ease, moving with the predatory silence of a hunting panther.

"Are they moving toward the master suite, Carlo?" Aurelio asked, his voice a barely audible whisper over the comms.

"They are sweeping the second floor, Boss," Carlo replied softly. "They are looking for you."

Aurelio’s jaw firmed into unyielding granite. He navigated the shadowed archways, his polished leather shoes making absolutely no sound on the thick carpets.

Two men in dark tactical gear stepped out from a branching corridor, their weapons raised.

"Did you think you could infiltrate my home and live to see the dawn?" Aurelio asked.

The men spun toward the deep voice, but they were entirely too slow. Aurelio fired twice. The suppressed weapon made a sharp, deadly sound, and both men collapsed instantly to the floor, neutralized before they could even pull their triggers.

Aurelio stepped over their bodies, his angular face a mask of cold, calculating wrath. The threat was eliminated. The estate was secure.

He walked back to the master suite, his broad shoulders finally relaxing a fraction of an inch. He knocked twice on the heavy oak door.

"Are you ready to open the door, Nerea?" Aurelio asked softly.

The deadbolt clicked, and the door opened. Nerea stood there, still gripping the heavy pistol, her chest heaving. When she saw Aurelio standing there, unharmed, she let out a shattered breath of relief and lowered the weapon.

"It's over," Aurelio said quietly, stepping into the room and taking the gun from her shaking hands. He engaged the safety and set it on a nearby dresser.

"Are they all gone?" Nerea whispered, her delicate cheekbones pale in the lamplight.

"Do you believe any man who crossed my threshold tonight survived to tell the tale?" Aurelio inquired, his cold eyes softening completely as he looked down at her.

He reached out, his tattooed hands gently framing her softly contoured face. His thumbs brushed lightly over her fair, rosy skin, wiping away a smear of soot. The immense violence of the night faded into the background, leaving only the profound, magnetic pull between them.

"You risked everything for me," Nerea said, her voice cracking.

"Did you think I would allow the woman who saved my pride to remain a servant in my home?" Aurelio asked, a flicker of profound, protective warmth entering his perceptive eyes. "Are you ready to leave this uniform behind?"

Nerea looked down at her black maid dress, the white apron stained and ruined from the siege. She looked back up at the towering, terrifying man who was offering her a place in his dangerous, blood-soaked world. She was no longer just a housemaid; she was a protector, a survivor, and the woman who had captured the heart of a mafia king.

"What happens now?" Nerea asked softly, leaning into the warmth of his hands.

"Shall we go rebuild our empire?" Aurelio asked.

Before she could answer, Aurelio leaned down, capturing her lips in a fierce, demanding kiss that sealed her fate to his forever. The war was over, but the reign of the new queen of the Grantham syndicate had just begun.

The morning sun cast a cold, pale light over the shattered glass and scarred marble of the Grantham estate. The air still smelled faintly of cordite and smoke, a lingering ghost of the violence that had claimed the night. But inside the private showroom, where the chaos had first been ignited, a strange, profound peace had settled.

Aurelio stood by the tall, repaired windows, gazing out over the sprawling grounds. He had changed into a fresh, immaculate dark suit, his powerful shoulders carrying the weight of his newly solidified empire.

Nerea stepped into the room, wearing a beautifully tailored, emerald-green silk blouse and dark trousers, clothes Aurelio had ordered for her before the sun rose.

"Did you sleep at all, Nerea?" Aurelio asked, closing the distance between them.

"A little," Nerea answered softly, stepping into his waiting arms. "The house is quiet now."

"Do you believe the savior of the Grantham family should ever wear a maid's uniform again?" Aurelio asked, offering her his arm.

May you like

"I think I look better in silk," Nerea whispered, a small smile playing on her lips.

"Shall we go remind Soraya of the penalty for treason in my house?" Aurelio asked, leading her out of the room and into the future.
