Chapter 8

The cinematic lighting of the estate felt suddenly cold and clinical as the glowing screen of the smartphone commanded the attention of every person in the room. The timestamped photographs were indisputable, digital proof of child abuse, captured mere moments after the assault had occurred. The wealthy American family, accustomed to hiding their sins behind closed doors and fat checkbooks, realized they were staring directly at their own destruction.

"You can't prove anything," Bethany stammered, though her voice lacked any of its previous venom. She took a step backward, her fair skin deathly pale. "Those pictures don't prove I did it. She could have fallen. She could have done it to herself."

The Father slowly lowered the phone, but he didn't put it away. He turned his head, looking over his shoulder at the paralyzed crowd. His eyes were entirely devoid of human empathy or mercy. The protective fury that had driven him to shout had evolved into something infinitely more dangerous—a cold, calculating, absolute resolve.

“Call the police,” the Father commanded.

His American accent was ice-cold, devastatingly controlled, and completely unwavering. He didn't yell. The quiet, lethal delivery of his words sliced through the room with the precision of a surgeon's scalpel.

"Call them right now," he continued, holding his phone out toward the Grandfather, who was still breathing heavily in the grip of his relatives. “And explain every mark on her.”

The silence was deafening. No one moved to pick up a phone.

"You wouldn't dare," the Grandmother whispered, her floral blouse trembling as her chest heaved with panic. "If you bring the authorities into this house, the scandal will ruin us. It will ruin Bethany’s career. You are a part of this family!"

"I am nothing to you," the Father replied, his voice a dead, emotionless void. "And you are nothing to me. You assaulted my daughter. You tried to cover it up as a prank. You threw glass at my head while I was holding a four-year-old. You are going to prison."

"We can settle this!" the Grandfather shouted, his tone shifting rapidly from rage to a desperate, pathetic negotiation. "How much do you want? Name your price! We will set up a trust fund for Rosie right now! We will pay for her college! Just delete those photos and walk out that door!"

"You think you can buy your way out of torturing a child?" the Father asked, shaking his head in absolute, profound disgust. "Your money is as filthy as your souls."

He turned his back on them for the final time. The trap had been set, and the evidence was secured. He adjusted his grip on Rosie, preparing to cross the threshold into the bright, safe sunlight of the afternoon.

But as he took his first step toward the door, Rosie moved.
