Chapter 5

The cinematic, flawless daylight pouring through the massive windows seemed to act as an unforgiving spotlight, highlighting the horrific contrast between Bethany’s smug, rosy face and the terrified, weeping child. The Father stood tall, his athletic frame radiating a terrifying, suppressed violence. His grey hoodie and faded jeans stood out sharply against the sea of expensive party clothing surrounding him.
"A prank," the Father repeated. The words tasted like ash and venom in his mouth.
"Yes, a prank," Bethany retorted, placing a hand on her hip, completely unaware of the lethal danger she was courting. "She didn't want to share her toys with her cousins, so we had to teach her a little lesson about sharing. It got a little physical, but she is fine."
The Father didn't argue with her twisted, psychotic logic. He didn't need to. He knew that words were utterly useless against monsters who felt no shame. Instead, he decided to force the entire room to look at exactly what they had allowed to happen.
With profound, heartbreaking gentleness, the Father shifted Rosie slightly in his arms. He used his large hand to softly cup the back of her head, gently turning her face away from his neck so that the bright, natural light hit her directly.
"Look at her," the Father commanded, his voice echoing powerfully.
He exposed Rosie’s deeply bruised cheek to the crowd. The dark, swelling purple mark was stark and agonizingly clear against her fair, rosy skin. Then, he carefully pulled up the sleeve of her star-patterned hoodie, revealing the harsh, angry red finger marks wrapping entirely around her tiny, fragile forearm.
Several guests gasped aloud. A woman in the back of the room covered her mouth in genuine horror. The visual evidence of the brutal assault was undeniable, shattering Bethany’s pathetic excuse of a "prank."
The Father locked his burning, furious eyes directly onto Bethany. His chest heaved as he struggled to maintain his grip on his own sanity.
“You did this to my four-year-old daughter?” the Father asked.
His American accent was shaking uncontrollably, vibrating with a murderous, protective fury that sent a physical chill down the spines of everyone in the room. It wasn't a question seeking an answer; it was a damning, absolute indictment.
"She was throwing a tantrum!" Bethany shrieked defensively, her smirk finally faltering as the eyes of her relatives turned accusatory. She pointed a shaking finger at the child. "She wouldn't listen to me! She was kicking and screaming!"

"She is four years old!" the Father roared, his voice booming like thunder, shaking the very foundations of the suburban estate. "She is a baby! And you put your hands on her like she was an animal!"
He pulled Rosie safely back against his chest, shielding her bruised face once again. He took a heavy step toward Bethany, the protective father transforming into a terrifying force of nature, ready to burn the entire house down to the ground.
