Chapter 4

The shattering of the crystal glass hung in the air, a violent echo that completely obliterated the polite, suburban illusion of the gathering. The Father stood perfectly still, his back still turned slightly to protect Rosie from the falling shards. He could feel the rapid, terrified beating of his daughter's heart against his own chest.
"I want to go, Daddy," Rosie whimpered, her tiny fingers digging desperately into the fabric of his hoodie.
"We are leaving, Rosie," the Father murmured quietly, his eyes tracking the room. "Just hold on tight."
Before he could take another step toward the front door, the crowd of relatives parted. Bethany stepped forward into the bright, cinematic light. At thirty-nine years old, she was a woman who hid her profound cruelty behind an expensive, patterned party blouse, tailored trousers, heavy gold jewelry, and sharp heels. Her fair, rosy skin was pulled taut in a sickening, condescending smirk.
"Oh, please, let's not be so dramatic," Bethany scoffed, her American accent ringing clearly through the tense silence.
She walked casually toward the center of the room, her heels clicking loudly against the floor. She looked at the Father, her eyes devoid of any human empathy or remorse. She crossed her arms, the gold bracelets on her wrists clinking together a metallic, mocking melody.
"You are blowing this entirely out of proportion," Bethany continued, rolling her eyes.
Rosie saw her aunt approaching and let out a breathless, terrified gasp. The little girl violently buried her face deep against her father’s neck, trying to make herself as small and invisible as possible.
"Stay away from us," the Father warned. His voice was no longer a shout; it had dropped into a low, vibrating hum of absolute, murderous intent.
Bethany let out a harsh, arrogant laugh. It was a sound of extreme contempt, completely dismissive of the profound trauma she had inflicted.
“It's just a prank,” Bethany laughed, waving her manicured hand dismissively toward the weeping child. “We were just playing around with her in the playroom. She shouldn't be so fragile. If she is going to be a part of this family, she needs to learn how to toughen up. You pamper her too much.”

The sheer, psychopathic audacity of her words paralyzed the room. To categorize the physical assault of a four-year-old child as a "prank" designed to "toughen her up" was a revelation of such deep, systemic rot that even a few of the silent relatives looked physically nauseated.
The Father slowly turned his body to fully face Bethany. The protective barrier of his silence broke. The anger that had been simmering inside him erupted into an inferno of righteous, unstoppable wrath. He was no longer just a father picking up his child; he was an executioner preparing to deliver absolute justice.
