Chapter 6

The mass exodus from the grand dining salon was swift and silent. The elite guests, eager to escape the suffocating tension and the terrifying reality of the mafia boss's wrath, gathered their coats and hurried out the massive mahogany doors. Within minutes, the sprawling, luminous room was entirely empty, save for the abandoned crystal glasses, the shattered remnants of the poisoned wine, and the two figures standing near the head table.

The bright, cinematic lighting cast long shadows across the polished marble floor. Reeve Ashbourne stood perfectly still, the adrenaline of the confrontation slowly ebbing from his system, leaving behind a profound, aching exhaustion. He looked at Mireille Fenwick. The twenty-five-year-old housemaid was standing by his side, her delicate hands clutching the pristine white apron of her black maid dress.

He walked slowly toward her, his leather shoes crunching softly on a stray shard of glass. He stopped just inches away, his towering, masculine presence completely enveloping her smaller frame.

"Are you unharmed, Mireille?" Reeve asked, his deep voice softening into a register he reserved only for her.

"I am fine, sir," Mireille whispered, looking up into his dark, intense eyes. "But the poison..."

She reached out, gently taking his right arm again. Without asking permission, Mireille lifted her hand, her fingers trembling slightly as she checked his sharp jawline where Aurelia's diamond rings had scraped his skin.

Reeve’s breath hitched. He closed his eyes, the simple, tender gesture breaking through the impenetrable armor he had worn for the past few hours. He reached up and gently framed her beautiful, expressive face with both hands. The artistic tattoos on his hands stood out sharply against her fair, rosy skin.

"Do you know how long I have waited for someone to look at me with genuine care, rather than fear or ambition?" Reeve asked, his thumbs lightly brushing across her cheeks.

"You don't have to wait anymore, Reeve," Mireille said softly, dropping his formal title in the heavy intimacy of the moment, her eyes shining with quiet, unwavering devotion. "I am here."

"Are you prepared for the consequences of standing by my side?" Reeve asked, his expression growing serious. "Aurelia was right about one thing. The other families will view this internal fracture as an opportunity. The Lucchese family is mobilizing. There will be violence. My world is not a safe place for a gentle woman."

"Did you think I was gentle when I hit her with that silver tray?" Mireille asked, a faint, defiant smile touching her lips.

Reeve let out a low, rumbling chuckle, a sound that hadn't echoed in the estate in a very long time. "No, I suppose not. You are far braver than any soldier in my syndicate."

"I will stay with you, Reeve. Whatever comes," Mireille promised, leaning into his warm palms.

Reeve leaned down, closing the distance between them, and pressed a deep, lingering kiss to her forehead, sealing the quiet, mutual affection that had finally been brought into the light.

But as he held her in the quiet dining salon, a sharp, urgent knock echoed from the heavy oak doors at the far end of the hall. Reeve pulled back slightly, his sharp jawline tightening instantly as the cold, calculating mask of the mafia boss returned.

"Will you enter?" Reeve called out.
