Chapter 1

The grand dining salon of the Ashbourne estate was a masterpiece of cinematic lighting, bathed in a natural, bright luminescence that entirely lacked the heavy yellow tint common to older mansions. It was a space designed for opulence and intimidation, where fifty of the city’s most influential donors, relatives, and staff moved around crowded dinner tables. The air hummed with the quiet, tense energy of a syndicate gathering, the crisp American accents echoing off the vaulted ceilings. Crystal glasses caught the light, gleaming next to heavy silver serving trays and meticulously folded napkins. It was a gathering of apex predators, all waiting for the evening’s main event to unfold.

At the center of this opulent stage was Reeve Ashbourne. Thirty-one years old, he was the undisputed boss of the syndicate, possessing a handsome, fiercely masculine presence. His dark hair was swept back flawlessly, his jawline dusted with neat, sharp stubble. Refined artistic tattoos crept up his neck and decorated his hands, starkly contrasting with the crisp white cuffs of his tailored dark suit. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch completed the image of terrifying authority. Yet, in this moment, that authority was being violently challenged from within his own bloodline.

Reeve’s older cousin, Aurelia Ashbourne, stood before him, the current hostess of the mansion. At forty, she was a terrifying vision in an elegant evening gown, draped in diamond jewelry that matched the heavy rings on her fingers. She was flanked by two massive bodyguards—one Black American, one white American—both wearing dark suits and earpieces, their expressions utterly devoid of emotion.

The two bodyguards had moved with sudden, coordinated precision, each gripping one of Reeve’s muscular upper arms, locking him in place. It was a brazen, unthinkable act of aggression in the middle of the dining salon.

Aurelia stepped forward, her diamond rings catching the light as she violently gripped Reeve’s jaw. In her other hand, she held a crystal glass filled with dark, ruby-red liquid poured from Reeve’s private wine decanter—a distinct crystal vessel marked with a singular red ribbon. She pressed the rim of the glass aggressively against his mouth.

Reeve jerked his head, his sharp jaw setting like stone as he turned his face away, refusing the drink.

"Drink," Aurelia commanded coldly, her American accent dripping with aristocratic venom as she brutally forced his face back toward her. "Prove you trust this family."

Reeve glared at her, his dark eyes burning with a lethal fury. The physical restraint by the bodyguards was a fatal insult, but the demand to consume the wine under such duress screamed of a trap. He kept his lips tightly sealed, the muscles in his neck ticking violently beneath his tattoos.

From the periphery of the crowded tables, a young woman moved with quiet, desperate urgency. Mireille Fenwick, a twenty-five-year-old housemaid, possessed a delicate, breathtaking beauty. Her dark hair was neatly pinned beneath a white lace maid headband, and she wore the sophisticated uniform of the estate—a black dress with a cinched waist, a pristine white apron, and practical flats.

She saw the violent struggle at the head table. She saw the heavy crystal glass pressed against the boss’s mouth. And unlike the fifty paralyzed guests surrounding them, Mireille knew exactly what was inside it.
