Chapter 8

The heavy, reinforced steel door of the subterranean safe room sealed shut with a definitive, mechanical thud, cutting Bree and Owen off entirely from the sprawling mansion above. The bunker was a stark contrast to the bright, luminous elegance of the upper floors. It was a utilitarian fortress of thick concrete and harsh fluorescent lighting, stocked with emergency provisions, independent communication arrays, and medical supplies.

Bree stood trembling in the center of the room, cradling the sleeping eleven-month-old tightly against her chest. Owen hadn't woken up during the frantic relocation. He remained blissfully unaware that a small army was currently descending upon his home.

She walked over to a leather sofa in the corner and carefully laid the baby down, pulling a thick, warm blanket over his soft formal romper. She sat on the edge of the cushions, staring blankly at the heavy steel door, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. The titanium lanyard around her neck felt like a physical weight, a constant reminder of the profound, terrifying trust the mafia boss had placed in her.

The silence within the bunker was agonizing. Bree had no idea what was happening above ground. She didn't know if the Hart family had breached the gates, or if Everett was safe. Every passing minute stretched into an eternity of agonizing suspense.

Suddenly, a low, muffled thud vibrated through the concrete walls, followed closely by a rapid series of sharp, rhythmic cracks.

The assault had begun. The heavy gunfire was muffled by tons of earth and steel, but the vibrations were undeniable. The Hart family hadn't waited for the ultimatum to expire; they were launching a full-scale siege on the Marlowe estate.

Bree gasped, instinctively throwing her body over Owen, shielding the sleeping baby with her own frame as the bunker trembled slightly. She squeezed her eyes shut, praying fervently for the gunfire to stop.

Minutes bled into an hour. The intermittent thuds and cracks continued, painting a terrifying mental picture of the violent war raging above them. Bree sat paralyzed, her hands clamped tightly over her ears, entirely consumed by the fear of losing the man who had just promised to protect her.

Then, the secure communication console on the desk across the room suddenly flared to life. The incoming transmission light flashed a bright, urgent red.

Bree scrambled off the sofa, her legs shaking, and rushed over to the console. She stared at the flashing button, terrified of what she might hear. Was it Marcus reporting that the house had fallen? Was it Annelise, demanding she open the door?

She took a deep, shuddering breath and pressed the receiver button.

"Hello?" Bree asked, her voice cracking horribly.

"Is he safe?" a deep, familiar voice demanded through the static.

Bree collapsed against the edge of the desk, tears of profound relief flooding her eyes. It was Everett. The low, rumbling timber of his voice was the most beautiful sound she had ever heard.

"He's asleep, Everett," Bree sobbed quietly into the microphone. "He hasn't woken up at all. Are you okay? Is it over?"

"Do I sound like a man who is losing?" Everett asked smoothly, his tone projecting absolute, terrifying confidence. "The Hart family severely underestimated our perimeter defenses. They are currently bleeding out in my courtyard. The primary assault has been repelled."

"Thank god," Bree breathed, wiping her tears away. "Can we come out?"

"Is the house secure?" Everett countered, his voice dropping into a cautious, lethal register. "No. We have reports of a secondary team attempting to breach the east wing through the servant entrances. They are looking for the entrance to the bunker. I need you to stay exactly where you are, Bree. Do not open that door under any circumstances. Do you understand me?"

"Yes. I understand," Bree promised fiercely.

"Are you afraid?" Everett asked softly, the static failing to mask the sudden tenderness in his voice.

"No," Bree lied, her eyes darting toward the heavy steel door. "I know you will stop them."

May you like

"Will I?" Everett murmured.

Before he could say anything else, a massive, deafening explosion rocked the entire estate. The bunker shuddered violently, the fluorescent lights flickering wildly before dying completely, plunging Bree and the baby into absolute, terrifying darkness. The communication console went dead. The secondary team had found the cellar.
