Chapter 1

The engagement dinner inside the Marlowe mansion was a display of luminous, unyielding opulence. Cascading crystal chandeliers spread a warm golden light across the vast dining hall, illuminating carved walnut paneling and towering marble columns. Tall ivory candles glowed inside crystal hurricane holders along tables draped in pristine white damask. Polished silver and gold-rimmed porcelain caught the light, while sparkling stemware reflected the bright, airy atmosphere. Low arrangements of cream roses ensured the guests’ faces were clearly visible, framing the elite of the city's underworld in soft, elegant warmth. Every face was fair, rosy, and American; every voice carried the practiced, polite hum of dangerous men and women pretending to be civilized for an evening.

Beside a towering, carved marble fireplace overlooking the occupied dinner tables stood Everett Marlowe. At forty-two, the widowed mafia boss was movie-star handsome, exuding a deeply masculine, terrifying power. He possessed broad shoulders that perfectly filled his tailored dark three-piece suit. His angular face, high-bridged nose, and sharply defined jawline were shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. Thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, with a few loose strands falling stubbornly over his forehead. He held his eleven-month-old son, Owen, against his chest. The baby, dressed in a soft formal romper and a small cardigan, shifted restlessly in his father's powerful arms.

A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch gleamed on Everett’s wrist as he adjusted his grip. His cold, observant eyes missed absolutely nothing.

To his right stood his fiancée, Annelise Hart. At thirty-two, she was striking, her fair skin glowing against a sculpted velvet evening gown. Diamond earrings caught the firelight, matching the massive engagement ring on her finger. She offered polished smiles to the passing capos, but beneath the surface lay a quietly controlling, ambitious nature.

Bree Dalton stood quietly to Everett’s left. At twenty-seven, the housemaid was breathtakingly beautiful, with a softly oval face, faint dimples, and expressive brows. Her hair was arranged in a neat, low braided knot. She wore a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a fitted silhouette, a short A-line skirt, and a neatly tied white apron with a crisp white collar and cuffs. Her slender figure and graceful posture made her look more like royalty than hired help.

At Bree’s feet rested a small, tightly packed canvas bag.

Bree stepped forward, moving with practiced elegance, and finished placing Owen’s feeding bottle on a small polished side table near the fireplace. As she began withdrawing her hand, Owen suddenly lunged forward in his father's arms. The baby caught Bree’s crisp white cuff in his tiny fist and held on with startling strength.

Bree froze. She paused, looking down at the child she had comforted through countless long, sleepless nights since his mother died. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs.

Everett’s cold eyes shifted downward. He noticed the tiny hand gripping the white cuff. Then, his observant gaze moved to the floor, locking onto the small packed bag sitting beside the maid’s pristine shoes.
