Chapter 5

The heavy service doors slammed shut behind the enforcers, cutting off Oswald’s frantic, echoing screams with a definitive thud. The sprawling reception hall was plunged back into a profound, ringing silence. The fifty guests remained perfectly still by the crowded tables, their eyes wide with fear and newfound respect. They had just witnessed a bloodless, brutal coup. Leander had not only eliminated the greatest threat to his power, but he had also sent a terrifying message to anyone who dared to challenge him.
Leander turned his head slowly, his dark eyes sweeping over the pale faces of the syndicate members. The bright, cinematic lighting illuminated the sharp, aristocratic angles of his jawline, highlighting the deadly resolve that secured his reign.
"Is there anyone else in this room who wishes to question my leadership or the security of my household?" Leander asked, his deep, measured voice echoing off the high ceilings.
When no one spoke, no one moved, and no one dared to even breathe too loudly, Leander nodded slightly.
"Then I suggest you all return to your homes. This reception is concluded," Leander ordered.
He didn't wait to see if they obeyed. He turned his broad shoulders, dismissing the most powerful people in the city entirely, and focused his complete attention back on the beautiful housemaid standing near the empty chair.
The mass exodus from the grand reception hall was swift and silent. The elite guests, eager to escape the suffocating tension, gathered their coats and hurried out the massive mahogany doors. Within minutes, the luminous room was entirely empty, save for the abandoned crystal glasses, the scattered floral arrangements, and the two figures standing near the head table.
Leander Ashbourne stood perfectly still, the adrenaline of the confrontation slowly ebbing from his system, leaving behind a profound, aching exhaustion in his shattered shoulder. He looked at Althea Whitmore. The twenty-five-year-old housemaid was standing by his side, her delicate hands clutching the pristine white apron of her black maid dress.
He walked slowly toward her, his polished leather shoes making almost no sound on the floor. He stopped just inches away, his towering, masculine presence completely enveloping her smaller frame.
"Are you unharmed, Althea?" Leander asked, his deep voice softening into a register he reserved only for her.
"I am fine, sir," Althea whispered, looking up into his dark, intense eyes. "But your arm..."
She reached out, gently hovering her hand over the heavy fabric of his medical sling, terrified of causing him any further pain. Without asking permission, Althea stepped closer, her fingers trembling slightly as she checked his sharp jawline where he had clenched his teeth against the agony.
Leander’s breath hitched. He closed his eyes, the simple, tender gesture breaking through the impenetrable armor he had worn for the past few weeks. He reached up with his uninjured right hand and gently framed her beautiful, expressive face. The artistic tattoos on his hand stood out sharply against her fair, rosy skin.
"Do you know how long I have waited for someone to look at me with genuine care, rather than fear or ambition?" Leander asked, his thumb lightly brushing across her cheek.
"You don't have to wait anymore, Leander," Althea said softly, dropping his formal title in the heavy intimacy of the moment, her eyes shining with quiet, unwavering devotion. "I am here."

"Are you prepared for the consequences of standing by my side?" Leander asked, his expression growing serious. "Oswald was right about one thing. The other families will view this internal fracture as an opportunity. There will be violence. My world is not a safe place for a gentle woman."
"Did you think I was gentle when I kicked his shin?" Althea asked, a faint, defiant smile touching her lips.
