Chapter 1

The reception hall of the Greystone estate was a masterpiece of cinematic lighting. Bright, natural illumination poured from the tiered crystal chandeliers, completely devoid of the heavy yellow tint that plagued lesser ballrooms. It was a space designed for opulence and intimidation, currently occupied by fifty of the city’s most influential family guests, capos, and staff. They moved around crowded reception tables, sipping champagne and exchanging quiet, American-accented pleasantries. Yet, beneath the veneer of high society, a venomous power struggle was silently suffocating the room.
At the center of this opulent stage stood Leander Greystone. Thirty-two years old, he possessed the rugged, undeniably masculine presence of a mafia boss. His dark hair was styled flawlessly, framing a sharp, aristocratic jawline. Refined artistic tattoos crept up his neck and decorated his right hand, starkly contrasting with the crisp white cuffs of his tailored dark suit. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch completed the image of absolute authority. However, his left arm, encased in a heavy medical sling, betrayed a vulnerability that his enemies were eager to exploit.
Tonight, the chief vulture circling the wounded boss was Oswald Greystone. Forty-six years old, Leander’s uncle and the most powerful senior capo in the syndicate, Oswald wore an expensive formal suit that stretched slightly over his frame. A luxury wristwatch glinted on his wrist as he approached his nephew. He was flanked by two massive bodyguards—one Black American, one white American—both wearing dark suits and earpieces, their expressions utterly devoid of emotion.
Oswald didn't offer a greeting. He moved with sudden, brutal violence. Reaching out, the older man grabbed Leander’s left wrist and viciously forced his injured arm out of its protective sling.
Leander stiffens immediately, a sharp hiss of pain escaping his teeth. He braced his free right hand heavily against the edge of a reception table to keep from collapsing, the muscles in his neck ticking violently beneath his tattoos.
"Apologize for freezing my accounts," Oswald demanded, his voice furious and booming, cutting through the ambient noise of the reception.
The violent action drew the immediate attention of the nearby guests. Conversations died out as dozens of faces turned toward the confrontation. Several capos stepped forward, but Oswald’s two towering bodyguards immediately stepped into the space, forming a wall of muscle and blocking anyone from approaching the head of the family.
Standing in the shadows just behind Leander was a figure who belonged to the estate, yet was entirely out of place in this violent power dynamic. Althea Whitmore, a twenty-five-year-old housemaid, possessed a delicate, breathtaking beauty. Her expressive eyes were wide with genuine terror, and her dark hair was neatly pinned beneath a white lace maid headband. She wore a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a pristine white apron, and practical flats that made almost no sound on the polished floors.

Althea had watched the entire exchange. She saw the malicious glint in Oswald’s eyes and the dangerous, agonizing tension in Leander’s broad shoulders. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. In the dangerous world of the Greystone syndicate, a housemaid stepping into a dispute between family members was a fatal error. Yet, seeing the man she secretly, deeply cared for being tortured in front of his peers overrode every instinct of self-preservation she possessed.
As Oswald released his brutal grip on the wrist, he reached his hand up, aiming directly toward Leander's injured shoulder.
