Chapter 2

The absolute silence in the grand dining room was a physical weight, pressing down on Willa’s chest until she felt she could hardly breathe. The golden light from the tiered crystal chandeliers suddenly felt harsh and exposing. She stood frozen beside the polished walnut table, her hand still resting protectively on the edge of the porcelain saucer.
Willa maintained eye contact with Cassian. She forced herself not to look away from his cold, perceptive eyes, which were now searching her softly oval face with a terrifying, piercing intensity. Her inner brows lifted helplessly, a silent plea for understanding as she navigated the most dangerous moment of her life. Moisture gathered rapidly along her lower eyelids, threatening to spill over her delicate cheekbones.
"She added something," Willa answered. Her voice was thin, fragile, but incredibly clear, carrying flawlessly across the dead silent room.
A collective, silent gasp seemed to ripple through the velvet dining chairs. The guests stared in unadulterated shock. The implication hung in the air—an assassination attempt at the engagement dinner, orchestrated right under the boss's nose.
Before Cassian could process the magnitude of the accusation, Odette intervened.
Odette smoothly adjusted her posture, the sculpted satin of her evening gown rustling softly against the upholstery. She met Cassian’s stunned gaze with a small, affectionate smile, projecting the image of a devoted, fiercely protective fiancée attempting to soothe a hysterical servant.
"Only something to help you sleep," Odette stated, her delivery smooth, soothing, and laced with a dismissive amusement.
She offered the lie with effortless perfection, but her eyes desperately searched Cassian’s angular face for any sign of acceptance, any indication that he would accept her version of reality and dismiss the beautiful housemaid's panic as a misunderstanding.
Cassian did not nod. He did not agree. He moved with the predatory, liquid grace of a man who commanded an empire. Pushing his chair back, he rose slowly to his full, imposing height, placing his broad shoulders and tailored dark suit directly beside Willa.
Odette’s affectionate smile began to tighten at the corners, hardening into a rigid, brittle line of panic as she realized he was not dismissing the girl, nor was he drinking the tea.
The silence stretched, thick and suffocating, until it was broken by the smallest voice in the room.
Finn, sitting quietly in his small dinner suit, looked directly across the table at Odette. The six-year-old boy’s brows drew together in puzzled sincerity, completely misunderstanding the lethal tension vibrating through the adults.
"You said he’d never wake," Finn said.
The words emerged quietly, without an ounce of malice or accusation, spoken as though he were simply correcting a small, factual mistake she had made in her explanation.
Cassian’s eyes remained on Finn for one long, silent beat. He absorbed the sheer innocence of his son's statement, the undeniable truth written across the boy's face that perfectly corroborated the maid's desperate action.
Then, Cassian slowly shifted that terrifying gaze toward Odette.

His head followed his eyes in a slight, deliberate turn. The muscles in his sharply defined jaw firmed into unyielding granite. His expression became completely still, a terrifying void that swallowed all the golden light in the room.
He held Odette’s eyes in cold, unwavering silence. He did not yell. He did not ask a question immediately. He simply stared at her, stripping away every layer of her deceit with a gaze that promised absolute ruin. Every guest remained perfectly attentive and utterly motionless, terrified to even draw a breath, waiting for the execution to begin.
