Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers cast a warm, decadent golden light across the gilded ceiling moldings and ivory-paneled walls of the grand dining hall. It was an engagement dinner meant to symbolize the absolute, unyielding power of the Grey family syndicate. Tall candles glowed fiercely in heavy silver candelabras, their flames reflecting off pristine white roses, crystal glasses, and gold-rimmed porcelain. Men in tailored tuxedos and women draped in silk sat in plush velvet dining chairs, their low, calculated laughter masking the blood-soaked reality of their wealth. The heavy silk curtains were drawn tight against the winter night, sealing the room in a luxurious, suffocating bubble of mafia politics.
At the center of the head table sat Cassian Grey. He was a man who commanded absolute obedience simply by entering a room. Handsome as a movie star, his broad, powerful shoulders filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit to perfection. His angular face, defined by a high-bridged nose and a sharply defined jaw, was shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. Thick, slightly wavy hair was swept naturally back, though a few loose strands fell carelessly over his forehead. His cold, perceptive eyes scanned his empire. Refined, generously spaced tattoos decorated his hands and fingers, catching the light as he rested his palm on the table, a heavy family signet ring gleaming on his finger. A small artistic tattoo peeked above his collar.
Opposite him stood his fiancée, Odette Sloane. She wore a sculpted satin evening gown that clung to her curves, diamond earrings flashing with every tilt of her head. She smiled graciously at the guests, the very picture of a benevolent future matriarch. Yet, beneath the polished veneer, she harbored a dark, dangerous ambition, frequently disguising her controlling nature as a profound concern for Cassian’s health.
Beside Cassian sat his six-year-old son, Finn. The boy was dressed impeccably in a small dinner suit, though his bow tie had been loosened throughout the long evening. He swung his polished shoes nervously beneath the table, looking incredibly small amidst the ruthless giants of the criminal underworld.
From the shadows of the arched doorway, Willa Hart emerged. Beautiful, with a softly oval face, delicate cheekbones, and expressive brows, she moved with slender, graceful proportions. Her dark hair was pinned into a loose, elegant French twist. She wore a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a slim fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. Her crisp white apron, collar, and cuffs starkly contrasted with the dark fabric. She carried a silver tray holding a delicate porcelain teacup, her hands trembling so violently the china rattled softly against the saucer.
Only an hour ago, hidden in the dim light of the pantry, Willa had seen Odette secretly pouring an unknown, cloudy substance from a small vial directly into the teapot intended for the boss.
Willa approached the head table, her heart hammering a frantic, terrifying rhythm against her ribs. She was terrified of the woman standing beside Cassian, but looking down at the mafia boss, her need to prevent his murder flared violently against her fear.
Willa carefully placed the teacup and saucer before Cassian. The rich aroma of Earl Grey filled the small space between them.
Cassian’s cold eyes dropped to the cup. He reached out with his tattooed hand, his fingers extending toward the delicate porcelain handle.
As his fingers brushed the china, Willa moved. With a desperate, trembling hand, she gently slid the untouched cup back across the polished walnut, moving it just out of his reach.
Cassian’s hand stopped in mid-air above the table.
He didn't yell. He didn't draw a weapon. He slowly turned his head, the loose strands of hair shifting over his forehead, and looked directly into Willa’s eyes, deeply studying her frightened, panicked expression.

“Willa,” Cassian said. His deep, low voice cut through the ambient noise of the dining room. He allowed a controlled, agonizing pause to stretch after her name. Every single guest stopped eating. The low hum of conversation was severed instantly. Dozens of powerful men and women turned their heads toward the head of the table in suffocating silence.
“Why stop me?” Cassian asked.
