Chapter 1

The luxurious ballroom was a masterpiece of bright, luminous colors and clean whites, bathed in a natural, cinematic lighting completely devoid of any heavy yellow cast or muddy orange tint. Crystal chandeliers cascaded from the vaulted ceiling, casting a brilliant and even glow across the polished marble floors. The entire space was clearly illuminated, reflecting off the crystal stemware and silver platters scattered across the tables. Fifty guests—a mix of high-ranking capos, wealthy relatives, and staff—filled the room with the steady hum of American accents. It was a reception meant to celebrate an engagement, but the atmosphere carried the heavy, suffocating weight of a hostile corporate takeover.
At the head table sat Florian Whitmere, a thirty-two-year-old mafia boss whose presence commanded absolute, terrified respect. He was strikingly handsome and unapologetically masculine, his dark hair naturally slicked back to reveal an angular face and an exceptionally sharp jawline coated in extremely short stubble. Artistic tattoos crept up his neck and decorated his hands, the dark ink standing in stark contrast to his tailored dark three-piece suit. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch gleamed as he rested his hands on the table. He was a widower, a father, and a man currently trapped in a political corner.
"The merger will solidify the eastern seaboard, Florian," muttered Marcus, one of Florian’s oldest capos, leaning in close. "Her family brings a lot of guns to the table."
"I am aware of what they bring, Marcus," Florian replied, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that carried no trace of joy. "The question is what they expect to take in return."
"They expect loyalty, darling," a sharp, feminine voice chimed in.
Octavia Wetherell, Florian’s thirty-four-year-old fiancée, slid gracefully into the seat beside him. She wore a breathtaking evening gown that hugged her curves, dripping in diamond jewelry. An enormous engagement ring weighed down her left hand, and her posture was supported by towering heels. She held a crystal champagne glass, offering the room a perfectly polished, entirely artificial smile.
"We are building a dynasty, Florian," Octavia continued, her American accent crisp and assertive. "Our families united. It’s exactly what this city needs. Don't you agree?"
"A dynasty implies trust," Florian answered, his gaze remaining fixed on the crowded room. "I trust very few people, Octavia."

"You’ll learn," she replied, taking a slow sip of her champagne.
Watching from the perimeter of the room was Corisande Alder. At twenty-five, the housemaid possessed a breathtaking beauty that rivaled any movie star in the room. Her slender build was clad in a fitted black maid dress, accented by a pristine white apron, crisp white collar and cuffs, and a delicate lace maid headband. She wore sensible flats, allowing her to move silently. Her expressive features were drawn tight with a visible, deep-seated anxiety. She watched Florian with a quiet, fierce devotion, her hands nervously smoothing the fabric of her apron. She knew the danger Octavia posed, and the tension radiating from the head table made Corisande’s heart hammer wildly against her ribs.
