Chapter 11

Evelyn’s motive was simpler.

She wanted her son protected from becoming another loyal second man history forgot.

Her husband had been one.

Caleb’s father served mine for twenty-five years.

No rank beyond capo.

No portrait.

No legacy room.

No stories at family dinners unless Evelyn told them.

“He gave his life to this family,” she said.

“He died at seventy-one in Florida.”

She glared.

“Not literally.”

“I know.”

She continued.

“Your father took credit for everything.”

Maybe.

I had heard versions.

“Caleb would not end like that.”

There.

This began before me too.

She looked at rank as memory insurance.

If Caleb became Boss, he could not be erased.

That explained the identical pins.

A private hierarchy.

A record.

A group who would remember him as leader before official history did.

“You were afraid he’d disappear.”

“Yes.”

“So you built him witnesses.”

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.”

That was sad.

Then I looked at the bruised memory Nora would carry from the banquet.

“And you used my daughter to test those witnesses.”

Evelyn’s face closed.

There.

She had thrown the capo pin into Nora’s hands earlier that afternoon intentionally.

I had discovered that from another guest.

Why?

To see which guards reacted when Nora carried Line property.

A loyalty test.

If a man rushed to retrieve it, he was still with Caleb.

If he ignored it, maybe wavering.

Then Caleb threw Nora onto the table when she refused to surrender it.

The test escalated.

They turned a child into bait.

I stared at my aunt.

“Your fear of Caleb being forgotten made you use Nora as an instrument.”

She whispered:

“I didn’t expect him to throw her.”

“But you started the test.”

“Yes.”

That mattered.

Not equal blame.

Still responsibility.

I thought of her husband.

A loyal man remembered mainly by her.

Maybe the family had failed him.

Maybe I should have known his story better.

Still, Nora did not owe payment for that old neglect.

Children should not inherit adults’ unfinished grief as assignments.
