Chapter 7

The corridor leading to the master suite was silent, heavily guarded by four of Silas’s most trusted men. They nodded respectfully as the boss approached, opening the heavy oak door for him.

Inside, the vast bedroom was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a roaring marble fireplace. Marianne was sitting on the edge of the massive four-poster bed, wrapped in a thick, luxurious wool blanket. She looked incredibly small, her simple dress hidden beneath the heavy fabric. Beside her, Lily was fast asleep, exhausted by the emotional whiplash of the evening, her head resting peacefully in her mother's lap.

Nora Ellis was standing nearby, quietly tending to a tray of hot tea and light sandwiches she had procured from the kitchen. She wore her fitted black maid dress with a quiet dignity, her white apron unblemished despite the chaos of the night.

When Silas entered, Nora immediately stepped back, smoothing her white collar and cuffs, her expressive eyes darting to his face to read the outcome of the confrontation downstairs.

"Thank you, Nora," Silas said softly, his deep voice carrying a profound, genuine gratitude. "You may leave us."

"Yes, sir," Nora whispered, offering a small, respectful bow before slipping out of the room, the heavy door clicking softly shut behind her.

Silas walked slowly toward the bed, dropping to one knee on the thick Persian rug so he was at eye level with his wife. The terrifying aura of the mafia boss vanished entirely, replaced by the profound, unprotected vulnerability of a man looking at a miracle.

"Marianne," Silas breathed, his voice cracking with raw emotion as he reached out, his tattooed hand hovering over hers. "I thought you were gone. I stood at your grave and watched them bury you."

Marianne looked down at him, her exhausted eyes filling with fresh tears. She reached out, her pale fingers tracing the sharp, angular lines of his face. "I tried to scream. The room was soundproofed. Every time I heard you in the dining hall... every time I heard you talking to her... I thought I was losing my mind."

"I will never forgive myself for not knowing," Silas whispered, bowing his head, a single tear escaping to trace a path down his cheek. "She told me you were dead, and I let her take your place."

"You couldn't have known, Silas," Marianne reassured him, gently lifting his chin. "She planned it perfectly. She paid the coroner. She paid the guards. She told me Lily perished in the smoke. She tortured me with that lie for six months."

Silas’s jaw tightened, the muscles ticking beneath his short stubble. The absolute cruelty of Vivienne's deception was staggering.

"She will spend the rest of her miserable life rotting in the dark for what she did to you," Silas promised, his voice a low, vibrating rumble of absolute vengeance. "No one will ever hurt you or Lily again. You have my word."

Marianne leaned forward, resting her forehead against his. "What happens now, Silas? Her family is powerful. They will come for her."

"Let them come," Silas replied coldly. "I will burn this city to ash before I let them touch my family again."
