Chapter 5

The silence in the grand dining room was broken only by the ragged, panicked breathing of Rosalind Pierce. The warm golden light from the crystal chandeliers seemed to mock the absolute ruin of her carefully constructed evening. The thirty elite guests, dressed in their finest tailored suits and sculpted gowns, sat immobilized, trapped in the gravitational pull of a mafia boss’s wrath.
Benedict did not move from his position beside his son. His hand remained a steady, comforting weight on Nolan’s small shoulder. He surveyed the room, his cold, perceptive eyes sweeping over the pale, rosy faces of the city’s most influential figures.
"Have you all finished your meals?" Benedict asked.
The question was delivered with the same deep, low voice and measured pauses that characterized all his speech, but the underlying command was unmistakable.
A prominent judge, seated near the center of the room, hastily placed his silver cutlery down on the cream damask tablecloth. "Yes, Benedict. The meal was absolutely exquisite. We... we should be going."
"Will you find the exits yourselves, or shall my men assist you?" Benedict inquired.
Chairs scraped loudly against the polished marble and thick patterned rugs as the thirty guests practically scrambled to their feet. There was no polite mingling, no lingering farewells, and absolutely no mention of the engagement. The men grabbed their wives' arms, steering them swiftly toward the carved walnut double doors. They fled the bright, airy room as if the building were on fire, eager to escape the crosshairs of Benedict Vale.
Within two minutes, the luxurious dining hall was entirely empty, save for Benedict, Rosalind, Vera, and little Nolan.
"Benedict, what are you doing?" Rosalind shrieked, her voice echoing shrilly in the vast, luminous space. "You just threw the mayor and two senators out of our engagement dinner! My father is going to be furious!"
"Should I tremble at the thought of your father's fury?" Benedict asked, turning his full, undivided attention back to her.
"You are humiliating me!" Rosalind sobbed, her hands balling into fists at her sides, crushing the delicate silk of her sculpted evening gown. "I have dedicated the last year of my life to building this alliance! I have tolerated that boy's endless whining about his dead mother, and this is how you repay me? Over a clumsy servant?"
"Do you believe this ring makes you untouchable?" Benedict asked, gesturing with a slight nod toward the massive diamond engagement ring glittering on her left hand.
Rosalind gasped, taking a step back, her eyes widening in absolute terror. "You wouldn't dare. Our families need this merger, Benedict. We control the shipping routes. You break this off, and you start a war."
"Have I ever shied away from a war?" Benedict asked, stepping away from the piano bench and closing the distance between them with slow, predatory strides. His polished leather shoes clicked rhythmically against the floor.
Vera instinctively stepped closer to Nolan, her uninjured left hand gently resting on the boy's back, shielding him from the escalating violence of the confrontation.

"You are insane," Rosalind whispered, her back hitting the edge of a white damask table. The tall candles flickered wildly from her sudden movement. "You are throwing away an empire for a ghost and a maid!"
"Are you capable of walking out the front door, or must I have you carried?" Benedict asked, stopping just inches from her, his towering, masculine frame casting a long, dark shadow over her trembling form.
