Chapter 10

The sheer magnitude of the offer hung in the luminous, warm air of the private study. Vera stared up at Benedict, completely speechless. A governess was a position of high respect and immense trust, offering a salary and security that far exceeded her role as a housemaid. It meant she would no longer be invisible; she would be a central figure in the life of the mafia boss's only heir.

"Are you unsure of my offer?" Benedict asked, a faint, rare hint of amusement touching the corners of his mouth.

"I am... overwhelmed, sir," Vera breathed, her delicate cheekbones flushed with a beautiful, rosy color. "I would be honored to care for Nolan."

"Will you begin immediately?" Benedict asked.

"Yes, Mr. Hale," Vera smiled, a genuine, radiant expression that lit up her softly oval face.

Before Benedict could ask his next question, the heavy silence of the mansion was abruptly shattered.

A blaring, high-pitched security siren erupted through the halls, the sound vibrating violently through the carved walnut paneling. The warm golden light in the study flickered, immediately replaced by stark, pulsating red emergency strobe lights.

Nolan jolted awake on the leather sofa, crying out in terror as the alarms wailed.

Vera leaped from her chair, ignoring the throbbing ache in her splinted hand, and rushed to the boy, scooping him into her left arm and pulling him tightly against her sophisticated black dress. "I've got you, Nolan. I've got you," she hushed him over the noise.

Benedict’s demeanor changed in a microsecond. The gentle father and grateful employer vanished, replaced instantly by the cold, lethal mafia king. His powerful shoulders squared, and his perceptive eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.

He strode quickly to his massive mahogany desk and pressed a button on the intercom system.

"What is the situation at the perimeter?" Benedict demanded into the microphone, his deep voice slicing cleanly through the chaotic wail of the sirens.

"Boss!" the frantic voice of his head of security crackled back over the speaker. "It's the Pierce syndicate! Rosalind’s father sent a hit squad! They just breached the main gates with two armored SUVs. We have multiple hostiles on the front lawn, heavily armed!"

Rosalind had not made an empty threat. The broken engagement had ignited a full-scale mafia war, and the enemy was already at the door.

"Are the interior blast doors engaged?" Benedict asked, remaining terrifyingly calm.

"Engaging now, sir. But they have heavy explosives. We are returning fire, but they outnumber the night watch!"

"Will you hold the main hall until I arrive?" Benedict asked.

"We will hold the line, Boss!"

Benedict released the intercom button. He reached under his desk, his tattooed hands moving with practiced, lethal precision, and pulled out a heavy, customized automatic weapon. He racked the slide, the metallic clack echoing sharply in the red-lit room.

He turned and looked at Vera. She was holding a trembling Nolan, her back pressed against the wall, her expressive eyes wide with fear, yet entirely resolute. She was not running.

"Are you prepared to lock this door behind me?" Benedict asked, walking toward them.

"Yes," Vera said, her voice shaking but firm.

Benedict stopped in front of them. He reached out and gently stroked his son’s hair, then let his hand slide down to lightly cup Vera’s cheek. The touch was brief, intimate, and profoundly protective.

"Will you keep him safe for me, Vera?" Benedict asked, his cold eyes burning with a fierce, masculine fire.

"With my life," Vera promised.

"Shall we show the Pierce family what happens when they threaten my home?" Benedict asked the empty air.

He turned, his tailored dark suit blending into the shadows of the doorway. He stepped out into the chaotic, flashing hallway, racking his weapon once more, ready to unleash hell upon the men who dared to interrupt the peace of his newly claimed family.
