Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the private Bellacorte mountain lodge cast a brilliant, golden glow over the grand entrance hall, illuminating a scene of opulent excess. It was a secluded fortress nestled deep in the snow-draped peaks of Colorado, completely isolated from the prying eyes of the world. Tonight was the sixty-first birthday of Richard Bellacorte, a man whose name commanded absolute, terrifying authority across the American underworld. The air inside smelled of expensive pine wood burning in the colossal stone fireplace, mingled with the scent of roasted meats and rich, aged bourbon.
Mark Bellacorte stood near the warmth of the roaring fire, adjusting the sleeves of his impeccably tailored, absurdly expensive cashmere sweater. His fair skin flushed slightly from the heat of the flames. He checked his heavy gold wristwatch, tapping his polished leather shoe against the hardwood floor. "Are the caterers ready? Dad hates waiting when he arrives," Mark said, his American accent clipped with irritation.
"Everything is perfectly in order, darling," Claudia replied smoothly. She stood near the long gift-wrapping table, adjusting a diamond necklace that sparkled against her elegant, emerald-green winter dress. Her high heels clicked sharply against the floor as she admired the mountainous stack of wrapped boxes and decorative wooden sleds. "The wine trolley is fully stocked. The guests are mingling in the west wing. Tonight will be flawless."
A sudden, soft rustling sound broke her concentration. From behind the velvet drapes near the terrace, a tiny, trembling figure emerged. It was three-year-old Noah. His face, usually cherubic with a rosy complexion, was smudged with dirt. He was dressed in torn, filthy clothes that looked as though they belonged in a gutter rather than a billionaire's estate. He was entirely barefoot, his small toes curling against the cold floorboards. In his small, dirty hands, he clutched a crude, handmade wooden airplane, clumsily wrapped with a bright red ribbon.
"What is he doing down here?" Mark snapped, his face contorting in disgust as he glared at his own son. "I thought I told the nanny to lock him in the attic."
"I... I wanted to give Grandpa his present," Noah stammered, his small voice cracking as he took a hesitant step forward, holding the little wooden plane out like a shield.
Claudia’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom. She stalked toward the boy, her heels sounding like hammer strikes. She snatched the boy by the collar of his ruined shirt, her manicured nails digging into his skin.

"Let me go!" Noah cried out, kicking his bare feet.
"Your cheap little gift isn’t going near Richard’s table," Claudia sneered, laughing cruelly as she dragged the boy toward the heavy glass doors of the terrace. With a violent, effortless heave, she shoved the three-year-old out into the freezing, relentless blizzard. As the boy fell backward into the deep snow, Claudia hurled the small wooden airplane out into the darkness after him. "Stay out there until you learn how to behave!" She slammed the heavy doors shut, locking the winter out, and turning back to the party with a satisfied smile.
