Chapter 8

The tranquility of Claire’s afternoon was abruptly shattered when the heavy glass doors of her executive suite burst open.

Kevin Whitmore barged into the room, his face red with exertion and fury. Right behind him was Grandpa Whitmore, leaning heavily on his cane, looking furious and severely out of breath. They had bypassed the lobby security, likely slipping in behind an employee, driven by sheer, desperate panic.

“You think you can just destroy our family, you arrogant piece of trash?!” Kevin screamed, his American accent echoing off the glass walls of the office. He pointed a trembling finger at Claire, who remained calmly seated behind her desk.

Sarah, the assistant, appeared in the doorway, her face pale. “I’m so sorry, Mrs. Whitmore, I already called security—"

“It’s fine, Sarah,” Claire said, raising a hand to placate her assistant. She stood up slowly, buttoning her navy suit jacket. She looked at the two men who had laughed at her crying son just two days prior.

“What do you want, Kevin?” Claire asked, her tone dripping with boredom.

“Grant is having a panic attack in his office!” Kevin yelled, stepping toward her desk. “My brother is ruined! And the condo association just called Dad—you cancelled the auto-draft on his HOA fees! He’s going to be evicted!”

“I suggest he finds a job, then,” Claire replied evenly. “Or perhaps you could support him, Kevin. You seem to have so much free time to attend barbecues and mock children, surely you have the capital to pay his rent.”

Grandpa slammed his cane against the floor. “You ungrateful woman! We welcomed you into this family! You owe us respect!”

“I owe you absolutely nothing,” Claire fired back, her voice suddenly dropping into a lethal, commanding register that froze both men in their tracks. She stepped out from behind the desk, her heels clicking aggressively on the hardwood floor.

“You sat in my backyard, eating food I paid for, and laughed while your granddaughter humiliated my son,” Claire said, stepping right up to Kevin, forcing the man to look her in the eye. “You thought I was weak. You thought because I wanted peace, I wouldn't fight back. You were wrong.”

Two massive building security guards suddenly entered the office, their hands resting on their duty belts.

“Ma'am, do you need these gentlemen removed?” the lead guard asked, eyeing Kevin and Grandpa carefully.

“Yes, please,” Claire said, returning to her calm, professional demeanor. “They are trespassing. If they resist, feel free to contact the police.”

Kevin’s bravado shattered instantly. He backed away, holding his hands up. “You’re crazy, Claire. You’re going to lose everything.”

“I’ve already secured the only thing that matters,” Claire said softly, thinking of Noah safe at the hotel. “Escort them out, gentlemen. And make sure their pictures are left at the front desk. They are never to be allowed in this building again.”
