Chapter 1

The afternoon sun washed the Whitmore family’s sprawling backyard in brilliant, cinematic colors. The sky was an impossible, vibrant blue, completely devoid of clouds, casting a warm, golden summer light over the meticulously manicured lawn. It was a picture-perfect American barbecue. The guests, a mix of affluent neighbors and extended family, mingled on the patio, holding frosted glasses of lemonade and craft beer. Their fair, rosy skin glowed with the gentle flush of the summer heat. Laughter echoed over the soft jazz playing from hidden outdoor speakers.

At the center of the patio sat a massive picnic table, adorned with a bright red-and-white checkered tablecloth. Sitting at the head of the table was eight-year-old Noah Ethan Whitmore, his cheeks flushed with absolute joy. He wore a crisp, light blue polo shirt, khaki shorts, perfectly pulled-up white socks, and pristine sneakers. In front of him sat his birthday cake—a towering, three-tiered masterpiece covered in vibrant, neon-green dinosaur frosting.

“Alright, buddy, make a wish!” a neighbor called out, his thick American accent ringing with cheerful encouragement.

Noah closed his eyes, taking a deep breath, his small hands gripping the edge of the table. Around him, the guests leaned in, smiling softly at the innocent sight.

But from the shadows of the large oak tree, sixteen-year-old Madison was already making her move.

Madison, Grant Whitmore’s daughter from his first marriage, possessed the same fair, rosy complexion as her father, but her features were currently twisted into a mask of pure malice. She wore a striped T-shirt tucked into a frayed denim skirt, her white sneakers completely silent on the grass as she approached her younger stepbrother from behind.

In her hands, she carried a heavy, galvanized steel bucket. It wasn't filled with water or ice. It was filled to the brim with thick, foul-smelling, heavy black mud she had scooped from the drainage ditch behind the garden.

Before anyone could register what was happening, Madison hoisted the bucket with a grunt of effort.

She was already dumping the bucket over Noah’s cake before a single warning could be shouted. The heavy sludge hit the table with a sickening, wet thud. Mud exploded across the neon frosting, crushing the cake into a unrecognizable brown smear. The force of the impact sent the filth splattering violently in every direction.

Noah let out a terrified shriek as the heavy mud splashed across his face, completely ruining his crisp blue polo shirt and soaking into his hair. He recoiled, his small hands flying up to protect his face, but it was too late. He was covered in filth, shivering from the shock of the cold mud.

Madison threw the empty bucket onto the grass. She threw her head back, laughing with a vicious, unhinged delight. Her voice was loud, piercing, and brutally mocking.

“Oops!” Madison yelled, clapping her hands together. “Guess your wish is ruined!”

The music seemed to fade into the background. The adults around the table froze, their casual summer clothing splattered with stray droplets of mud, their faces twisting into expressions of profound shock and deep discomfort.
