Chapter 4

The shockwave of the slap had barely settled before Grant Whitmore finally pushed his way through the crowd of stunned barbecue guests. He was out of breath, his fair skin flushed a deep, angry crimson. He wore a crisp white polo shirt, expensive khaki shorts, and leather loafers, looking every inch the oblivious, entitled patriarch.
“What the hell is going on here?!” Grant bellowed, his American accent thick with outrage. He looked at the ruined cake, his crying son, and finally, his teenage daughter sitting in the grass, clutching her face.
“She hit me, Dad!” Madison wailed, pointing a shaking finger at Claire. “She slapped me for no reason!”
“For no reason?” Claire repeated, her voice dripping with absolute venom. She didn’t back away as Grant marched toward her. “She dumped a bucket of swamp mud on your eight-year-old son’s birthday cake. And your brother and your father stood there and laughed about it.”
Grant looked at Kevin, who immediately held up his hands defensively. “Hey, it was just a harmless prank, Grant. Claire went completely psychotic. You need to get your wife under control.”
Grant turned his furious gaze back to Claire. “You laid your hands on my daughter? Are you out of your mind, Claire? You don’t ever touch her! Apologize to Madison right now, or so help me God—”
“Or what, Grant?” Claire interrupted, stepping directly into his personal space. Her dark eyes bore into his. “What exactly are you going to do?”
Grant hesitated, slightly unnerved by the absolute lack of fear in his wife’s posture. “You are completely out of line,” he hissed, trying to keep his voice low to save face in front of the guests. “You’re embarrassing this family. Go inside, clean yourself up, and we will deal with this later.”
Claire stared at the man she had been married to for ten years. The man who had just watched his son get humiliated and chose to defend the abusers.
“No,” Claire said simply.
She turned on her heel and walked back to Noah, who was still standing by the table, trembling. She picked up her small leather clutch from a clean spot on the patio. Inside, she quickly verified she had her absolute essentials: her smartphone, her house key, and her heavy, platinum-edged company access card.
“Come on, Noah,” Claire said, taking her son’s muddy hand. “We are leaving.”
“You walk out that gate, Claire, and don’t bother coming back!” Grant shouted, his ego bruised as the guests watched the drama unfold. “You can’t just walk away from this!”
Claire paused at the wooden fence gate. She didn’t look back at him.

“I’m not walking away, Grant,” Claire said coldly over her shoulder. “I’m shutting it down. All of it.”
She pushed the gate open and walked out, leaving the Whitmore family to rot in their own toxic backyard.
