Chapter 3

Claire pulled Noah tighter against her chest, hugging him with a fierce, desperate strength. She reached for a clean cloth napkin that had miraculously survived the blast on the edge of the table and began to gently wipe the heavy mud from her son’s tear-stained face.
“It’s okay, Noah,” Claire whispered into his ear, her voice steady and unnervingly calm. “I’ve got you. Mommy’s got you.”
Above them, Madison was still laughing. The cruel, nasal sound of her amusement grated against Claire’s eardrums like shattered glass.
“Look at him cry like a little baby,” Madison sneered, pointing a finger at Noah. “God, you guys are so sensitive. It was just a joke.”
Claire finished wiping Noah’s eyes. She slowly pressed a kiss to his forehead, then stood up. She smoothed down the front of her mud-stained sleeveless dress. The heavy diamond wedding ring on her left hand glinted aggressively in the bright sunlight.
She did not yell. She did not scream. Claire marched straight toward Madison, her sandals stepping precisely over the ruined cake and the spilled mud.
Madison’s laughter hitched slightly as she saw the dark, absolute fury burning in her stepmother’s eyes, but she held her ground, emboldened by the presence of Kevin and Grandpa. “What?” Madison challenged, rolling her eyes. “Are you gonna put me in a time out—”
Claire’s right hand whipped through the air faster than anyone could register.
The sound of the slap was a sharp, explosive crack that echoed across the entire backyard. Claire struck Madison across the face with everything she had, the force of the impact snapping the teenager’s head violently to the side.
Madison let out a shocked shriek as her feet tangled together. She completely lost her balance, crashing hard onto the manicured grass, her denim skirt twisting around her legs.
The entire backyard erupted in gasps. Kevin stumbled backward in shock, his smug smile vanishing instantly. Grandpa dropped his iced tea, the glass shattering on the patio stones.
Madison pressed a trembling hand to her rapidly reddening, fair cheek, looking up at Claire with wide, terrified eyes. She had never been struck in her life. She had never faced a single consequence for her cruelty.
Claire stood over her, a towering monument of maternal wrath. She looked Madison straight in the eyes, her voice completely devoid of warmth, fueled by a furious, decisive power.
“Tomorrow,” Claire said, her words slicing through the heavy summer air like a scalpel, “you may be transferring to another school.”
May you like
“You can’t do that!” Madison sobbed, the reality of the threat piercing through her shock. “My dad won't let you!”
“Your dad doesn't pay your tuition,” Claire replied, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. “I do.”
