Chapter 4

The devastating confession dropped like a live grenade onto the cream marble floor. The words, spoken with such raw, unprotected emotion, shattered the fragile reality of the opulent Christmas Eve dinner. A collective, audible gasp erupted from the velvet dining chairs nearby. Murmurs of absolute shock and outrage rippled through the syndicate members. The woman destined to be the queen of the Vale syndicate had been physically abusing a defenseless servant solely for comforting the boss's heir.
"That is an outrageous lie!" Odette shouted, standing up abruptly from her chair, her diamond earrings swinging wildly. The polished public smile had completely vanished, replaced by a feral mask of desperation and cornered panic. "She is a lying whore trying to ruin our evening, Grayson! I have never laid a hand on that pathetic creature!"
Grayson did not look at Odette. The artistic negative-space tattoos on his hands stood out starkly as he reached out, acting with a profound, terrifying calm. He positioned his broad, masculine body deliberately between Odette and Nina. It was a physical shield, an unmistakable declaration of absolute protection that stripped away Odette's authority in a single, fluid movement.
Grayson looked down at his six-year-old son, who was watching the scene with wide, frightened eyes. The mafia boss’s sharp, angular face softened for a fraction of a second. He gave Luca a small, reassuring nod, a silent promise that the reign of terror in his home was officially over.
Luca didn't hesitate for another second. The little boy in the navy suit scrambled out of his heavy velvet chair and threw himself forward. He wrapped both of his small arms tightly around Nina’s waist, burying his face in the folds of her rumpled white apron.
Nina let out a ragged, heartbroken sob of pure relief. She sank slightly, wrapping her arms around the child, resting a gentle, trembling hand on Luca’s back. She held him fiercely, the warmth of the embrace a stark contrast to the freezing violence simmering in the room.
Only then did Grayson slowly turn his head toward Odette.
His jaw tightened slightly, the muscles ticking beneath his very short stubble. The cold, unyielding armor of the mafia boss slammed firmly into place. He held a cold, unwavering stare, locking the manipulative woman in a silent, terrifying promise of absolute retribution.
The silence stretched, heavy and apocalyptic. Odette cradled her arms against her luxurious emerald satin gown, gasping in panic as she realized her meticulously crafted coup had failed spectacularly. The room held its breath, suspended in silence, waiting for the apex predator to strike.

"Grayson, you must listen to reason," Odette pleaded, her American accent dripping with a manufactured, icy pragmatism as she desperately tried to regain control. "Even if I did discipline her, it was for the good of the boy! A maid cannot act as a surrogate mother to your heir! It makes you look weak to the other families!"
"Do you believe," Grayson began, speaking so slowly that every syllable landed like a physical blow across her face, "that I require the political advice of a woman who tortures my staff behind my back?"
