Chapter 3

The realization that something was terribly wrong radiated outward from Grayson Vale like a physical shockwave. The sheer, masculine power emanating from his broad shoulders was intoxicating and terrifying all at once. The clinking of fine porcelain ceased entirely within his immediate radius, the silence spreading down the long banquet table until it consumed the entire grand dining hall. One by one, every single dinner guest stopped eating and speaking. Fifty of the most dangerous men and women in the city turned their heads, their fair, rosy faces illuminated by the ivory candles, all staring toward the head of the table.

Grayson did not look at the elite guests, nor did he look at his polished fiancée sitting beside him. He rose slowly to his full, towering height, his tailored dark three-piece suit casting a formidable shadow over the exquisite Christmas feast. He stepped smoothly around his velvet chair, placing himself directly beside Nina.

The proximity of the mafia boss was overwhelming. Nina trembled in her creased black maid dress, her hands clutching her rumpled white apron.

Grayson looked directly down into Nina’s expressive, exhausted eyes. He saw the dark, puffy shadows of prolonged crying, the askew white ruffled headband, and the sheer terror vibrating through her delicate frame. The pieces of a horrifying puzzle began to snap together in his mind. He had been away for a month, trusting his home to his future wife. He had returned to a son who flinched and a maid who looked like she had been dragged through hell.

"Nina," Grayson said. His voice was deep, slow, and incredibly controlled, but it carried a lethal, apocalyptic authority that shook the very foundation of the room. "What consequences?"

The question hung in the bright, luminous air, demanding an answer that would dictate the survival of everyone seated near the head table. The entire syndicate was staring at the housemaid. Capos shifted uncomfortably in their velvet dining chairs. No one dared to breathe too loudly.

"Grayson, darling, please," Odette interjected quickly, attempting to assert her authority and dismiss the tension. Her polished smile strained at the edges. "The maid is simply overworked and emotional. She is confusing the boy. You shouldn't indulge this kind of dramatic theatrics during our Christmas dinner."

Grayson did not even turn his head to acknowledge Odette. His unwavering, intense focus remained entirely on the young woman standing beside him.

"Answer me, Nina," Grayson commanded softly, though the dark promise in his tone echoed clearly across the silent room. "Tell me the truth."

Nina stood paralyzed, her delicate features pale with shock. She felt the crushing weight of fifty gazes, but the only eyes that mattered were the ones burning into hers. She knew that answering this question would either save her and the little boy she loved, or it would seal her death warrant.

Tears gathered heavily along Nina’s lower eyelids, making her expressive eyes shine brilliantly in the golden light. She steadied a trembling breath, her chest rising and falling rapidly as she prepared to deliver a truth that would tear the political alliance of the syndicate completely apart.

Nina held Grayson's gaze, refusing to look away, and spoke quietly through a violent tremor in her breath.

"Odette hits me after Luca’s hugs."
