Chapter 1

The private bridal suite of the grand estate was a vision of absolute perfection, bathed in bright, cinematic colors that made the room feel like a scene from a classic Hollywood masterpiece. Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the intricate ivory lace of Nia’s stunning mermaid-style wedding gown. At twenty-five, she was breathtakingly beautiful, her features commanding the room with an elegance that was both magnetic and deeply intimidating. A sparkling tiara rested flawlessly in her hair, and a heavy diamond choker caught the light around her neck. She stood before the gilded vanity mirror, adjusting the delicate satin of her bodice, the picture of a blushing bride preparing for the happiest day of her life. But the atmosphere shifted the moment the heavy mahogany door clicked shut.

Trent stood just inside the room. At thirty-nine, he possessed a polished, arrogant charm that had fooled the city’s elite for years. He wore a pristine white tuxedo jacket with a sharp black bowtie, perfectly tailored black trousers, and gleaming patent leather dress shoes. A luxury watch peeked out from his pristine cuff. But the charming smile he usually wore was completely gone, replaced by a dark, cruel sneer. He turned the deadbolt on the door with a slow, deliberate click that echoed loudly in the quiet suite.

"Trent?" Nia asked, turning away from the mirror, her voice smooth and carefully modulated. "What are you doing? The ceremony begins in twenty minutes. You aren't supposed to see me before I walk down the aisle. It’s bad luck."

Trent did not answer immediately. He took a step forward, his patent leather shoes silent on the plush carpet. From behind his back, he slowly revealed a solid metal golf club, its polished steel gleaming menacingly in the bright sunlight. He dragged the heavy head of the club against the hardwood trim of the floor, the scraping sound a deliberate attempt to shred the peaceful silence of the room. He cornered her beside the vanity, trapping her between the heavy velvet curtains and the edge of the mirror.

"Luck has nothing to do with today, my sweet, naive bride," Trent said, his voice dripping with condescension as he raised the metal club, pointing the heavy end directly at her chest. "Understanding your place in my world is what matters today. You have been a bit too independent lately. A bit too vocal in front of my father's associates."

"Trent, put that down," Nia commanded, her tone dropping slightly. "This is not a joke. You are wrinkling my dress, and you are acting completely out of line."

"Out of line?" Trent barked a harsh, mocking laugh, taking another step closer so she could smell the expensive scotch on his breath. "I draw the lines here, Nia. My family owns this city, and by extension, we own you. I needed to make sure you understood the new rules of our arrangement before we stood in front of that priest."

He raised the golf club higher, angling it threateningly near her beautiful face, expecting her to cower, expecting her to beg. He leaned in close, his pale face twisting into a mask of ugly, inherited misogyny.

"This is how my father taught my mother to obey," Trent whispered, his voice a mocking, venomous hiss. "A quick lesson behind closed doors to ensure absolute perfection in public. You're going to learn to keep your mouth shut, Nia. Starting right now."
