Chapter 6

The bridal suite, once a symbol of luxurious preparation, had transformed into an executioner's chamber. Victor’s hands shook slightly as he clutched the lapels of his charcoal morning suit. He backed away from the two towering bodyguards, his polished leather oxfords scraping against the floor.
"This is impossible," Victor whispered, his eyes darting frantically between Nia and her capos. "The Chicago Commission is run by the Moretti family. You have no connection to them. We ran background checks on you, Nia. You're from a corporate real estate family in Atlanta!"
Nia let out a soft, mocking laugh that cut through Victor's pride like a razor.
"My father was Marcus Moretti, Victor," Nia corrected him, her voice smooth and venomous. "He had many interests outside of Chicago, and many ways of keeping his bloodline hidden from old, paranoid dinosaurs like you. When he passed away six months ago, you celebrated. You thought the Commission was weak. You thought it was the perfect time to expand your pathetic little operation into our southern territories."
"So you set this up," Trent gasped from the sofa, finally finding his voice, though it was stained with tears of sheer panic. "The gala in Atlanta... the introduction. You targeted me."
"You were an incredibly easy target, Trent," Nia said, looking down at him with undisguised disgust. "A spoiled, insecure prince desperate to prove to his daddy that he could conquer a strong woman. I just had to smile, wear a few pretty dresses, and let you think you were a god. You brought me right through the front door of your father's fortress."
"What do you want?" Victor demanded, trying to salvage a shred of his dignity by puffing out his chest. "If you kill us here, my men downstairs will slaughter you. I have fifty armed guards in the ballroom!"
"Your guards work for the highest bidder, Victor," a voice spoke from the hallway.
A third man stepped into the suite. He wore a sharp navy blue suit, his silver hair slicked back. Victor recognized him immediately. It was Silas, Victor's own head of security.
"Silas?" Victor gasped, clutching his chest. "You traitor!"
"It's just business, Victor," Silas said coldly, bowing his head respectfully toward Nia. "Miss Moretti offered my men triple their current salary, full medical benefits, and the promise that we wouldn't have to take orders from your idiot son anymore. The transition was seamless. The ballroom is completely secured."
"You see, Victor," Nia smiled, adjusting her diamond choker gracefully. "Violence is so archaic. True power is economic. I didn't need to fire a single bullet to take your empire. I just bought it."
Victor collapsed into a decorative armchair, his legs giving out beneath him. He buried his face in his hands, realizing decades of violent work had been unraveled in a single afternoon by a woman in a wedding dress.

"What happens now?" Trent whispered, trembling on the sofa.
"Now," Nia said, gesturing to the two capos beside her, "you are going to walk me down the aisle."
