Chapter 5

The silence in the grand dining gallery was absolute, a heavy, suffocating weight pressing down on the chests of everyone present. The tall candles flickering inside their silver candelabras seemed to freeze, casting long, unmoving shadows across the polished walnut tables. The wealthy guests held their breath, their crystal stemware forgotten. The sheer audacity of the revelation was unthinkable; the future bride of the mafia boss had been running a shadow operation against him inside his own home.
Juliana’s fair, rosy skin turned entirely translucent. She gripped the fabric of her sculpted satin evening gown, the diamond engagement ring catching the light as her hand shook violently.
"She is lying!" Juliana shrieked, her composed facade completely shattering. "She is a manipulative, lying servant! She is trying to turn you against me because she is jealous of our life, Alden! You cannot believe the word of a maid over your future wife!"
Alden did not look at Juliana. He remained perfectly still, his powerful shoulders squared in his dark three-piece suit. His cold, perceptive eyes lowered to look at the six-year-old boy huddled against Mina’s apron.
Owen, still clutching the fabric of his mother's dress, slowly turned his head. His small, creased shirt and cardigan looked absurdly out of place in the opulent, brightly lit room. The little boy looked directly at Juliana, bypassing the terrifying crowd of adults and the imposing mafia boss.
Owen’s lower lip trembled violently. The fair, rosy cheeks of the child were pale, and the question burning in his eyes carried a profound, agonizing hurt rather than any childish anger. He did not understand the syndicate politics or the espionage; he only understood the emotional torture he had endured.
"You said Mommy didn't want me," Owen stated.
He spoke quietly, his American accent small and deeply wounded. It was the simple, heartbreaking confusion of a child trying to understand why he had been discarded. The words hit the room with the devastating force of a physical blow.
Alden froze. His entire body went rigid, the breath catching in his broad chest. His eyes remained on Owen for one silent, agonizing beat. The harsh, lethal tension around Alden’s eyes briefly softened, replaced by a flash of raw, unbearable disgust at the psychological cruelty inflicted upon the child.
Slowly, terrifyingly, Alden’s eyes shifted. The movement was predatory, his eyes moving first toward Juliana, followed by a slight, deliberate turn of his head. His sharply defined jaw firmed until the bone threatened to snap under the pressure. His mouth became completely still, settling into a hard, unforgiving line.

He held Juliana’s eyes in a cold, unwavering silence that promised absolute destruction. The mafia boss said nothing. His silence was infinitely more dangerous than a scream, stripping away her diamonds, her satin gown, and her lies, exposing the cruel, power-hungry monster trembling beneath.
Every single guest in the room remained hyper-attentive, paralyzed by the overwhelming, lethal energy radiating from Alden. The luminous, airy room offered no sanctuary to the woman caught in the crosshairs of his perceptive eyes. The engagement dinner was officially poised on the edge of an abyss, waiting for Alden Kincaid to pull the trigger.
