Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant, warm golden light across the gilded ceiling moldings of the mansion’s luxurious dining gallery. Below the radiant glow, polished walnut bookcases lined the ivory-paneled walls, and a grand marble fireplace roared with a steady, comforting fire. The room was a portrait of American high society and underworld power, filled with elegantly dressed guests. They were a striking crowd, all possessing fair, rosy skin that caught the ambient golden illumination, their melodic American accents rising and falling in polite conversation.

Tall candles glowed warmly in heavy silver candelabras, perfectly situated among pristine white roses, fine porcelain, and crystal stemware. The clinking of glasses and the soft scraping of silver against china filled the air as the guests enjoyed the lavish engagement dinner.

At the head of the gallery stood Alden Kincaid. He was a mafia boss of terrifying repute, yet he possessed the movie-star handsome features of a classical statue. His powerful shoulders effortlessly filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit. He had an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. Thick, slightly wavy hair swept naturally back from his face, though a few loose strands fell carelessly over his fair forehead. Cold, perceptive eyes surveyed the room with chilling accuracy. Refined hand and finger tattoos with generous spacing peeked from beneath his crisp cuffs, and a small, artistic neck tattoo was just visible above his collar. A heavy family signet ring and a polished leather wristwatch caught the candlelight as he raised his glass.

"Are you enjoying the evening, Senator?" Alden asked, his deep, low voice vibrating with a controlled pause.

The wealthy politician, his rosy cheeks flushed from the expensive wine, nodded eagerly. "It is a magnificent dinner, Alden. The atmosphere is absolutely perfect. A beautiful night to celebrate your upcoming nuptials."

"Does perfection not require a certain... vigilance to maintain?" Alden inquired, his cold eyes shifting away from the politician to scan the perimeter of the room.

Beside him stood his fiancée, Juliana Vale. She was thirty-three, draped in a sculpted satin evening gown that hugged her elegant figure. Diamond earrings sparkled brilliantly against her fair skin, matching the massive engagement ring on her finger. She smiled warmly at the senator, her posture radiating poised confidence.

"We are just so thrilled to have our closest friends here," Juliana said, her voice smooth and polished. "It feels like the beginning of a wonderful new chapter for all of us."

Moving gracefully near the edge of the dining gallery was Mina Hollis. The twenty-seven-year-old housemaid possessed a beauty that easily rivaled any woman in the room. She had a gently squared face, high cheekbones, expressive brows, and hair gathered into a soft, neat low bun. She wore a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. A crisp white apron, a white collar, and matching cuffs completed her immaculate uniform.

Yet, beneath her polished exterior, Mina was drowning in a quiet, agonizing despair. It had been exactly two months since she had last seen her six-year-old son, Owen. Two months of sheer terror, forced to act as a spy within Alden’s home by the very woman who now smiled so brightly beside him. Juliana had orchestrated the abduction, using the child as collateral to ensure Mina reported Alden’s every move. Mina had no idea where her little boy was being held, and the weight of that horrifying secret made every breath in the luminous dining room feel like inhaling shattered glass.
