Chapter 16

Gavin changed slowly enough that I believed some of it.

He stopped asking about East Harbor.

Stopped attending family meetings he had no role in.

Started working in a smaller logistics company outside Ferrante.

No borrowed authority.

No family name opening doors.

He hated it.

Good.

Then he got better at it.

Sienna noticed.

So did I.

They remained separated.

Also good.

Change should not become a performance designed to win the victim back.

One afternoon Gavin visited Mila.

Supervised.

She was brushing her growing hair.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Braid again soon?”

He smiled sadly.

“If you want.”

She handed him the brush.

“Help.”

His hands shook.

He had never braided hair.

Terrible.

The result looked like rope damaged in a storm.

Mila laughed.

Sienna laughed from the doorway.

Gavin did too.

No one called it forgiveness.

No one needed to.

For ten minutes, he was simply a father doing something gentle badly.

That was better than promises.

Later he told me:

“I thought being respected meant nobody could tell me no.”

I looked at him.

“And now?”

“It means hearing no without becoming dangerous.”

Better.

Much better.

May you like

Not redemption.

Direction.
