Chapter 11

Mila asked for her braid.

I had kept it.

Wrapped carefully in cloth.

I did not know why.

Maybe evidence.

Maybe grief.

Maybe because throwing it away felt like pretending what happened could be cleaned up.

She looked at it in my hands.

“Mine?”

“Yes.”

“Can Mommy have?”

Sienna’s face broke.

I gave it to her.

She held the severed braid against her palm like something alive.

Then Mila touched her shortened hair.

“Will grow?”

“Yes.”

Sienna kissed her forehead.

“It will grow.”

“Long?”

“As long as you want.”

That mattered.

Choice.

Not restoration.

Mila might one day keep it short.

The goal was not returning to the exact child before the garage.

It was making sure the next decision belonged to her.

She looked at Gavin, who had been allowed one supervised visit.

“Daddy cut?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“Daddy let?”

Silence.

Children find the exact question adults avoid.

Gavin’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Mila stared.

“Why?”

He swallowed.

“Because I was scared of telling Grandma no.”

Mila frowned.

“You big.”

I almost laughed despite myself.

Gavin cried instead.

“Yes.”

“Grandpa bigger?”

I sighed.

Sienna laughed through tears.

“No,” Gavin said softly. “That’s not why.”

Good.

At least he understood one thing.

Power was not size.

Not volume.

Not fists.

It was whether fear decided your choices.

Gavin had failed that test in front of his daughter.

May you like

Now she knew.

There would be no hiding behind adulthood.
