Chapter 4

The golden light of the dining hall offered no sanctuary to Georgina Sloane. She stared up at Rowan, her fair, rosy skin drained of all color, leaving her looking sickly and translucent. She opened her mouth, her American accent pitching high and breathless with sheer panic.
"Rowan, please, you have to understand," Georgina stammered, her hands trembling as she reached toward his tailored suit, though she did not dare touch him. "She came to the gates months ago! She had no proof, just a wild story! I was protecting you! I didn't want some grifter trying to extort you for money!"
Rowan did not move. He looked down at her outstretched hands, the refined artistic tattoos on his own fingers flexing slightly as he processed the magnitude of her betrayal.
"Is offering a grifter employment in my own home your preferred method of protection?" Rowan asked, the measured pause in his delivery acting like a tightening noose.
"I wanted to keep an eye on her!" Georgina cried out, looking frantically around the room at the seated guests, silently begging someone for support. But the elite crowd sat immobilized, their faces pale with shock. "If I sent her away, she would have gone to the press! She would have ruined our engagement! I was trying to protect our future, Rowan!"
"Did you assume my future required the erasure of my past?" Rowan asked.
He slowly turned his broad, powerful shoulders, sweeping his cold, observant gaze across the thirty guests seated at the tables. The prominent politicians and syndicate lieutenants held their breath, terrified to draw the attention of the apex predator in the room.
"Have you all finished your meals?" Rowan asked the room at large.
The question was polite in its phrasing, but the command was absolute and undeniable. Chairs scraped violently against the polished hardwood and marble floors as the guests practically scrambled to their feet. There were no courteous farewells, no lingering handshakes. Men and women fled the bright, elegant room with frantic urgency, desperate to escape the blast radius of Rowan Ashford’s wrath.
Within ninety seconds, the expansive dining room was completely empty, save for Rowan, Georgina, and Mila.
The heavy walnut doors clicked shut, plunging the vast, luminous space into a profound, ringing silence. The cascading chandeliers continued to cast their warm golden light over the abandoned gold-rimmed porcelain and half-empty wine glasses.
Mila stood frozen by the table, her hands still clutching the silver serving tray against her white apron. Tears were tracing silent, wet paths down her delicate cheekbones. She had finally spoken the truth, but the explosive reality of it was overwhelming.
Georgina backed away from the head table, her sculpted satin gown rustling aggressively. She wrapped her arms around her waist, a defensive posture that crushed the expensive fabric.
"You cannot do this to me," Georgina wept, her carefully constructed facade completely destroyed. "My family arranged this marriage! We are supposed to unite our syndicates! Are you going to throw all of that away because of a maid who claims to be yours?"
"Do I look like a man who negotiates with a traitor?" Rowan asked, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her. His polished leather shoes clicked ominously against the floor.

"I am your fiancée!" Georgina shrieked, tears of desperate rage filling her eyes. "I love you!"
"Can love exist where the truth has been buried?" Rowan asked, his voice echoing off the ivory-paneled walls.
