Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers suspended from the vaulted ceiling cast a brilliantly warm, golden light across the grand dining hall of the Ashford estate. The illumination was luminous and airy, reflecting off the gilded ceiling moldings and the pristine ivory-paneled walls to bathe the room in a soft, elegant warmth. In the center of the space, an ornate marble fireplace crackled gently, its glow rivaled only by the tall ivory candles flickering inside heavy silver candelabras. Polished walnut tables were dressed in impeccable white damask, holding gold-rimmed porcelain, gleaming silver cutlery, and sparkling crystal stemware. The room was a portrait of American high society intertwined with underworld power, filled entirely with fair-skinned, rosy-cheeked guests whose American accents blended into a sophisticated, continuous hum of wealthy chatter.

At the head of the main table sat Rowan Ashford. At forty-nine, the mafia boss was as handsome as a classic movie star, possessing a deeply masculine aura that commanded the entire room without a single gesture. His powerful shoulders filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit flawlessly. He had an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, with a few loose strands falling over his forehead. Fine lines framed his cold, observant eyes—eyes that missed absolutely nothing. Refined artistic tattoos graced his hands and fingers with generous, elegant spacing, while a small, artistic tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.

Standing to his left was Georgina Sloane, his thirty-three-year-old fiancée. She was a vision in a sculpted satin evening gown that clung perfectly to her figure. Diamond earrings caught the golden light, matching the heavy engagement ring on her finger.

"The evening is an absolute triumph, isn't it, Senator?" Georgina asked a guest seated nearby, her smile perfectly practiced and warm. "Rowan and I are simply thrilled to have our closest friends here to celebrate our future."

"It is a magnificent event, Georgina," the senator replied, raising his glass. "The Ashford and Sloane families uniting will bring unprecedented peace to this city."

Rowan stared at his crystal glass, his face an unreadable mask. He turned his head slightly, his deep, low voice vibrating through the space. "Do you believe peace is ever truly bought with champagne, Senator?"

The politician chuckled nervously at the mafia boss's question, taking a quick sip of his wine.

Across the room, waiting in the shadows of the marble columns, stood Mila Hart. The twenty-six-year-old housemaid was breathtakingly beautiful, possessing a softly oval face, expressive brows, and delicate cheekbones that flushed with a natural, rosy warmth. Her hair was arranged in a neat, loose pinned twist. Her slender, graceful proportions were highlighted by a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. A neatly tied white apron, white collar, and cuffs completed her uniform.

In her hands, her fingers trembling slightly, she held a silver serving tray. Resting upon it was a freshly baked blackberry pie. It was not a recipe from the estate's world-class chef. It was her mother’s recipe. Evelyn’s recipe.

"Are you ready with the dessert, Mila?" the head butler whispered sharply, his American accent clipped.

"Yes," Mila replied, her voice soft but strained. "I am ready."

"Then serve the boss," he instructed, pointing toward the head table.

Mila took a deep breath, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. She stepped out into the golden, luminous light, moving gracefully toward the man who controlled the city. The man Georgina had sworn would kill Mila if he ever found out who she truly was.
