Chapter 1

The subterranean garage beneath the private Ferrante estate was illuminated by clinical white fluorescent tubes that washed the polished concrete in crisp, shadowless clarity. There was no warm yellow tint here, only the cold, immaculate gleam of luxury paintwork, customized chrome, and sterile stone. High-end detailer bottles lined the wall racks like laboratory vials, reflecting pristine daylight-balanced LED strips overhead.

Near the far wall, beside a low padded detailing bench, sixty-four-year-old Marjorie Cole leaned her full weight downward. Her tailored silk sleeves were pulled back, diamond rings and double-looped pearls clinking against each other as her manicured hands pinned three-year-old Mila Ferrante against the vinyl cushion. The toddler’s formal dress was twisted, her small sneakers kicking fruitlessly against the floor.

Beside them stood Sabrina Cole, clutching a pair of heavy, stainless-steel hair-shears. Her fair cheeks were flushed with a malicious thrill, her emerald drop earrings swinging as she leaned over the child.

"Hold the little brat still, Mother," Sabrina muttered, her voice trembling with spite.

"I have her," Marjorie hissed through clenched teeth. "Do it before someone comes down."

With a sharp, cruel yank, Sabrina gathered Mila’s long, carefully woven side braid into her left fist. She wedged the cold steel blades against the base of the girl’s scalp.

Mila squeezed her eyes shut, hot tears spilling down her rosy cheeks. "No! Mommy! Grandpa—"

The shears snapped shut with a sickening, fibrous crunch.

The heavy braid detached entirely, slipping from Sabrina’s fingers and hitting the oil-free concrete with a soft, lifeless thud.

Sabrina leaned in close, her red lips curving into a grotesque smile. “Next time you see something, keep your mouth shut.”

The pneumatic chime of the private elevator echoed through the cavernous space.

The brushed-steel doors slid open without a whisper.

Nico Ferrante stepped out onto the concrete. At fifty-six, he possessed the commanding, breathtaking presence of an old-Hollywood icon—impossibly handsome, broad-shouldered, and radiating an ancient, lethal authority. His thick dark hair was combed back with aristocratic precision, grey dusting his temples, framing an angular face, a razor-sharp jawline, and a neatly groomed full beard. His charcoal three-piece suit was tailored to perfection, the crisp white collar unbuttoned just enough to expose the hollow of his throat.

His grey eyes swept the room and locked onto the low bench.

He saw his three-year-old granddaughter pinned beneath Marjorie’s hands. He saw the scissors in Sabrina’s grip. He saw the severed hair coiled on the floor.

Nico moved without running, yet he crossed thirty feet of concrete before either woman could inhale.

With one violent, effortless sweep of his left arm, Nico tore Marjorie off the child. The sheer torque of the motion sent the older woman spinning across the floor, her designer heels skidding wildly before she caught herself against a metal tool cabinet.

Nico scooped Mila off the bench with his right arm, lifting the trembling toddler against his broad chest. His large hand cradled the back of her head, feeling the jagged, freshly sheared stubble where her braid had been.

Mila buried her face into the curve of his neck, her small frame convulsing in ragged, suffocating sobs.

"Grandpa…" she wept, her tiny voice cracking against his collar. "Grandpa… Daddy pushed Mommy."
