Chapter 8

The heavy oak doors of the Monroe estate swung shut with a definitive, echoing thud, sealing the toxic family inside their crumbling empire. Aaliyah stepped out into the crisp, bright afternoon air. The cinematic sunlight washed over her, entirely free of the suffocating shadows that had haunted the mansion. She walked briskly down the manicured stone pathway toward her sleek, black luxury sedan parked in the circular driveway.

"Are you okay, baby?" Aaliyah asked softly, opening the rear door of the car and gently placing Zoe into her car seat.

"My cheek hurts a little bit, Mommy," Zoe sniffled, reaching up to touch the mild red mark on her medium-brown skin.

"I know, sweetie. I am so sorry," Aaliyah murmured, her heart clenching with residual maternal fury. She expertly buckled the five-year-old in. "We are going to go home, put some ice on it, and I will make you a huge bowl of chocolate ice cream. How does that sound?"

Zoe managed a small, brave smile. "With sprinkles?"

"With all the sprinkles," Aaliyah promised, kissing her daughter’s forehead.

She closed the rear door and walked around to the driver's side. As she slid behind the steering wheel of the powerful sedan, the adrenaline that had fueled her surgical destruction of Meredith’s life began to slowly recede, leaving behind a cold, calculating clarity. She had crossed the Rubicon. By exposing her wealth and aggressively seizing the Monroe assets, she had effectively declared war on the old-money establishment that Gordon and Patricia belonged to.

She started the engine, the vehicle purring to life. She shifted into drive and smoothly navigated the car out of the imposing iron gates of the estate, leaving her past in the rearview mirror.

For ten minutes, the drive was completely silent, save for the soft hum of the tires on the asphalt. The bright video colors of the passing trees and suburban houses offered a peaceful contrast to the violence they had left behind.

Suddenly, the silence in the cabin was shattered by the sharp, persistent ringing of the car's Bluetooth system.

Aaliyah glanced at the dashboard display. The caller ID was blank. It read simply: Unknown Caller.

Her perfectly sculpted oval face tightened. Very few people possessed her direct, private cell phone number. The ones who did were either on her payroll or highly dangerous.

"Mommy, your phone is ringing," Zoe noted from the back seat.

"I hear it, baby," Aaliyah said, keeping her eyes fixed on the road ahead.

She tapped a button on the steering wheel, accepting the call. The cabin filled with the sound of a steady, rhythmic breathing for a long, agonizing second.

"Aaliyah," a deep, heavily accented male voice finally spoke through the speakers. The voice did not carry an American accent; it was distinctly European, smooth but laced with a lethal, terrifying authority.

Aaliyah’s blood ran cold. Her elegant hands gripped the leather steering wheel so tightly her knuckles turned pale. She recognized the voice instantly. It belonged to Elias Thorne, a ruthless international venture capitalist and the silent, deeply dangerous partner who had secretly funded Gordon Monroe's failing enterprises.

"Elias," Aaliyah replied, forcing her voice to remain perfectly even and devoid of fear. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"
